Easy Flour Tortillas Recipe

My kids were so excited last week when I made our favorite easy flour tortillas recipe.  We love having these tortillas for dinner, they are perfect to use for tacos or fajitas.  Learning how to make homemade flour tortillas is so easy and turn out soft and delicious!

Truthfully, I don’t make these easy homemade flour tortillas very often because they can feel time consuming.  But, the days when I do take the extra 30 minutes to make them are so so worth the little bit of extra work!  I highly recommend this easy flour tortillas recipe!

My dad is the one that taught me how to make homemade flour tortillas.  I have so many fond memories of watching him in the kitchen, wearing his stripped apron and a huge smile as he rolled out the dough. Every time I make this recipe I can’t help but think of him!

How To Make Homemade Flour Tortillas

One of my favorite things about this flour tortillas recipe is because it’s so cheap to make!  The ingredients are all staples in my pantry, so it’s nice to be able to make them homemade, rather than having to spend money at the store to buy tortillas.  Plus, they taste so much better!

To make flour tortillas you will need to first mix the below ingredients together in a bowl:

  • 5 cups flour
  • 1 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp baking powder

mixing dry ingredients together

Next, use a pastry cutter to cut in 1/2 cup shortening.

Don’t have a pastry cutter?  No worries!  Just use a fork!  It’ll still work just fine!

Continue mixing the shortening until it is mixed evenly and thoroughly and resembles peas.

Form a well with the flour mixture, by scooping a small hole in the middle of the flour.  Add 2 cups of boiling water into the bowl of flour.

Use a spoon to quickly stir up the dough until it is thoroughly mixed.

Knead the dough for 5 minutes and then separate it into 12 equally sized balls.

Next, use a rolling pin to  roll each ball into a circle until it is flat and very thin.

Fry each tortilla in a hot frying pan for 1-2 minutes, or until it’s just barely beginning to brown.  Flip and fry the other side of the tortilla for 1 minute.  Be careful not to cook the tortilla to long or it will become dry and brittle.

Keep the tortillas warm until it is time to use them.  These flour tortillas are perfect for fajitas, tacos, burritos and enchiladas.
