DIY Harry Potter Wand

August 31, 2022 By: Sweet Frugal Lifecomment

Easy Homemade Harry Potter Wand With Chopsticks

Last month my youngest turned ten (I can’t believe how fast he is growing up!).  He asked for a Harry Potter themed birthday party.  I’m pretty sure he decided on this idea from our recent Universal Studios trip….but I wasn’t complaining!  Once we decided on the theme I knew we couldn’t have a Harry Potter themed party without having wands (amiright??).  So, with a little bit of DIYing and patience we whipped up a few budget friendly wands!  My son and I had so much fun making these DIY Harry Potter Wands!  They are SO easy and addicting to make!  I seriously didn’t want to stop creating!

These homemade Harry Potter wands with chopsticks are the perfect craft for any Harry Potter lover, including kids and adults!  And, do you want to know the best part????  They were also really cheap!  The only thing I had to buy were the chopsticks and some hot glue!  Fortunately, I had paint and paintbrushes at home, but luckily they are both really cheap to buy if you need some!

How to Make DIY Harry Potter Wands

The first thing you need to do before making these homemade wands is to gather your supplies.  You will need:

  • Wooden Chopsticks
  • Hot Glue Gun
  • Glue Sticks
  • Acrylic Paint
  • Paintbrushes

1.  Squeeze Hot Glue Onto Chopstick

The first thing you will need to do to make your DIY Harry Potter wand is to warm up your hot glue.  I like to place the hot glue gun over a paper plate, so that the melty glue will drip onto the plate as it warms.  This makes for easy clean up!

Once your hot glue is warm and melty, it’s time to make the design of your homemade wand.  I love this part!!

All you have to do is take your hot glue gun and slowly squirt hot glue onto the handle part of one chopstick.

This is the part when you can let your creativity shine!  You can put a lot of hot glue on the end for a nice, thick handle.  Or, you might choose to only put on a small amount of glue.  Feel free to add some swirly glue designs too.   I tried to cover about 1/3-1/4 of the chopstick with glue, just depending on the design I was going for. Whatever you think will look good!

One of my favorite things about these homemade wands is that no matter how your glue comes onto your chopstick, the finished product will still look good!  I worried a few times that I had messed up a wand with clumps of hot glue, but once I was done, it always looked just as good as all of the other wands!

2.  Let The Hot Glue Dry

Next, you will need to set your chopstick onto a paper plate and let the glue dry.  Hot glue dries fairly fast, so it shouldn’t take very long before being able to move to the next stop.

3.  Paint Chopstick

Once the hot glue is dry, you can start painting your chopstick/wand!  We all decided we preferred the dark and moody colors for the wands, but really anything goes!  It was so fun to mix colors together and make something magical and unique!

This step is so easy, just dab a little bit of glue onto your paintbrush and paint the wand!

Once you are done painting your wand set it onto a paper plate to dry.

Most of our wands needed two coats of paint.  So, make sure to check the wand once the paint is dry to see if it will need to be painted again.

Enjoy!

That’s it!  Your DIY Harry Potter wand is complete!  See how easy that was???  It’s the perfect craft for adults and kids and everyone in between!  All that’s left to do is to spend hours casting magical spells (Acio wand!).

Easy Homemade Christmas Ornament

December 13, 2021 By: Sweet Frugal Lifecomment

This is the perfect Christmas craft idea for kids!

Are you looking for a fun craft to do with your kids this Christmas?  You have to try this easy homemade Christmas ornament!  I bought all of the supplies at the Dollar Tree, making it a very budget friendly activity!

I always add a craft to our Christmas bucket list each December, and these are the perfect Christmas ornaments to make with kids, because they only take a few minutes, and the kids can easily customize the colors however they want.  Plus, there is nothing better then getting to see your child’s art hanging on the tree each year.  Every piece is full of sweet memories and make me so happy!

“We are a participant in the Amazon Services LLC Associates Program, an affiliate advertising program designed to provide a means for us to earn fees by linking to Amazon.com and affiliated sites. As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.”

Gather Supplies

The first thing you will need to do is gather your supplies.  I bought all of my supplies at Dollar Tree, but you can also get them on Amazon or any craft store.

Clear Christmas Ornaments

Craft Paint

And that’s it!  Such an easy, budget friendly project!

Craft supplies for homemade christmas ornaments

How To Make This Easy Homemade Christmas Ornament

Now that you have your supplies, let’s get crafting!  One of my favorite things about this Homemade Christmas ornament is that it is fast and easy.  If you worry that you aren’t a “crafter”, do not worry anymore!  This craft is perfect for you!

The first thing you will need to do is take the cap off of the ornament (easy enough right?)

Next, take one of your paints and squeeze a small drop into the outer rim of the ornament.  Allow the paint to pour down the sides.   Remember, you can never add to much paint.

Then, take another color of paint and do the same thing, squeeze a small drop into the outer rim and allow it to pour down the sides.

Continue dropping paint into the ornaments, alternating the color each time.  I recommend 2-3 colors in each ornament.

Make sure to add plenty of paint so that it will cover the entire ornament.

And you are almost done!  See, I told you this was easy!

Lastly, just turn your homemade Christmas ornament upside down and place it in a plastic cup.  Let it sit there for 24 hours.  Do not skip this step or shorten the time.  The bulb needs to let all of the paint drain out and fully dry.  Gravity is an important step in this craft!

Finishing Touches

After letting your ornament dry for a full 24 hours, pick it up from the cup, admire the beautiful, colorful design you made, attach the cap and then proudly hang it on your Christmas tree to enjoy.

So pretty, right?!?  I love experimenting with different combinations of colors, and especially watching what my sweet kids come up with.  No two ornaments ever turn our the same, and that’s the best part!

Easy Craft With Nature Items: Nature Bookmark Tutorial

June 20, 2021 By: Sweet Frugal Life2 Comments

Fun nature craft for kids.

I just spent a wonderful week with my sister in the mountains.  We took walks, watched movies, played games, and enjoyed getting out of our daily routines.  There is really nothing I love more than a quiet week away.  My sister planned such a fun craft with nature items, a nature bookmark!  I loved it so much and felt like it would be perfect for camping craft or a home school nature study.

This nature craft got the kids outside exploring and kept them quiet inside for a few hours creating.

F67AFE2D-22CF-4900-8F1E-1D157C9E4A30

Sweet Frugal Life is a participant in the Amazon Services LLC Associates Program, an affiliate advertising program designed to provide a means for sites to earn advertising fees by advertising and linking to Amazon.com.  As an amazon associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Nature Bookmark Supplies

To make this easy craft with nature items you will need to collect a few supplies.  You will need:

  • Self Laminating Pouches
  • Nature items, such as flowers and leaves.
  • Ribbon
  • Paper towels
  • Scissors

First, a Nature Walk

Before making your bookmark you need to go on a nature walk.  This is my favorite part!!

As you spend time exploring outside collect a few flowers, leaves, and any other beautiful thing you find.  Make sure to get a good variety to help you design the perfect bookmark.

C5142709-6A22-4DF4-B1FC-069BAFDD35FF

Press Flowers

After your nature walk, bring your treasures back home to begin making your bookmark.

This first thing you will need to do is press your flowers for a full 24 hours to allow them to dry out.

No worries, this is really simple to do!

Just lay your flowers and leaves out on a paper towel and then put another paper towel on top.  Layer books on top of your paper towel to help press them flat.

Keep your flowers under the books for at least 24 hours.  This is important!  We weren’t patient enough and skipped this step.  Which resulted in flowers that weren’t dry.

Making Your Bookmark

Once you have finished drying your flowers for a full 24 hours it’s time to design your bookmark, this is the fun part!

Get out the self laminating pouches and lay them flat on the table.  Cut it in two, this way you will get two bookmarks from each pouch.

Lay your nature collection down on the non sticky part of the pouch.  You can play around for a few minutes until you have the perfect design.  My kids really loved using their creativity for this part.

3E954AA2-0348-4A13-BCC1-6A943A6E0AF7

Once you have your flowers laid exactly how you want them (be sure about this!), put the sticky part of the pouch on top.

This part was tricky!  It is hard to redo any mistakes, so you will want to take your time and be exact.  Our kids needed a lot of parental help with this part.

Slowly peel off the backing of the pouch as you gently place the sticky side on top of the flowers.  Press and seal as you are gently peeling it off.

After you are done laminating and sealing, cut the bookmark to your ideal shape, punch a hole through the top and thread a ribbon through the hole.  That’s it, you’re done!

In Conclusion

This was a really fun craft with nature items.  My kids have all been so proud of their bookmarks and I can’t wait to try this craft again.  It was the perfect way to get outside and preserve the beauty in nature.  I hope your kiddos enjoy it as much as we did!

How to Make a Rice Bag Heating Pad

June 18, 2021 By: Sweet Frugal Life3 Comments

DIY rice bag heating pad tutorial.

The other day my son asked me how to make a rice bag heating pad.  I was so excited he asked!  It was a fun sewing project to do together.  A rice bag heating pad is so quick and easy to whip up, I knew this would be the perfect project for a beginner sewer.

We love to use these rice bags in the winter to warm up the beds or as a heating pad for body aches and pains.  All you have to do is heat the bag in the microwave for a few minutes and you have a heating pad!

We are a participant in the Amazon Services LLC Associates Program, an affiliate advertising program designed to provide a means for us to earn fees by linking to Amazon.com and affiliated sites.  As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Easy Rice Bag Heating Pad Tutorial

Here is how to make a rice bag heating pad.  Don’t worry, it’s easy!

1.  Gather Your Supplies

Before starting to sew your rice bag, gather up all of your supplies.

You will need:

  • 1/4 yard fleece fabric (For the outer shell.  You can use cotton, but we like the bag to be soft and cozy.)
  • 1/4 yard plain cotton fabric (this will be your inner shell)
  • Uncooked Rice (we eye balled the amount we used, but it was probably around 4 cups)
  • Sewing Machine
  • Rotary Cutter
  • Cutting Mat
  • Ruler

2.  Cut Your Fabric

Now that you have found all of your supplies, it’s time to start making the rice bag heating pad.

With your rotary cutter cut two pieces of fleece fabric and two pieces of cotton fabric to a size of  6 inches by 12 inches.  You will have 4 cut pieces of fabric in all.

3.  Sew Cotton Fabric

The cotton fabric will be the lining that goes inside of your bag.

Lay the two cut pieces of cotton fabric on top of each other, so all sides match up.  You won’t see this fabric once the bag is finished, so it doesn’t matter if right sides are together or not.

Pin the two pieces together to help it not to shift while sewing.

Sew together, leaving one of the smaller sides open for the rice.  We sewed around the bag twice to make sure there were no holes.  You don’t want any rice to fall out!

4.  Sew Fleece Fabric

Next, you will need to sew your fleece fabric.

To do this, just follow the same steps you followed in step 3.

Pin your two cut pieces of fleece together, but this time make sure the right sides (pretty side) of the fabric are touching.

Now, sew three sides of the fleece fabric together.  Leave one of the smaller edges open.

5.  Putting it Together

Now, it’s time to put your bag together.

Turn your fleece fabric bag right-side out, so that the seam is on the inside of the bag.

Next, insert your cotton bag inside the fleece bag.

Open up your un-sewed side of the cotton bag and fill it with rice.  We just kept dumping until the bag was about 3/4 full.  You can eye ball this part until you think the bag is mostly full.

Take your rice bag to your sewing machine and sew the unfinished side of the cotton bag.  This does not need to look good, no one will ever see it, but do make sure it is sewed well by stitching over it a few times.

Once the cotton bag is all sewed up, it’s time to finish up the fleece bag.

Push the unfinished edges of your fleece bag into the bag to form a nice fold on top.  Pin the folds down to keep them in place.

Sew over the folds to give the bag a nice closure.  Make sure to back stitch thoroughly so the bag doesn’t come apart.

Your bag is now finished!

See how easy that was?!?!

My son was so excited and proud of himself.  We have already used this bag multiple times.

These rice bag heating pads make the best gifts for teachers, neighbors and friends.

How to Heat Your Rice Bag

It’s so easy to heat up your rice bag!  Just put it in the microwave for 2 minutes.  That’s it!  Enjoy your nice, soft heating pad to ease those sore muscles or to help warm up your bed.

Let me know if you have any questions about how to make a rice bag heating pad.  I hope you love them as much as we do.

How To Make A Pom Pom Garland Out Of Yarn

I recently discovered how to make yarn pom poms and I am now obsessed!  These pom-poms turned out to be easy to make and so cute!  My daughters and I spent all evening making pom poms and experimenting with different sizes and techniques.

We decided to turn these yarn pom poms into a cute garland for Valentines Day.  I love how it turned out and am already planning more garlands in other themes and colors!  I see a spring garland in my near future!

These were so fun (and cheap!) to make, I thought I would share an easy tutorial with all of you!  I was able to use items I already had at home and didn’t need to spend any money (yay!), but you can find some quality yarn for less than five dollars and it will make hundreds of pom-poms!

Gather Supplies

To make your yarn pom pom you will need to first gather your supplies.  For this project you will need:

  • Yarn (softer yarn seems to work best)
  • Sharp Scissors

Yep!  That’s all you need!  I told you these were easy!

How To Make Yarn Pom Poms

Now that we have the supplies, let’s start crafting!

First, take a small string of yarn and begin wrapping it around two of your fingers.

Keep wrapping the yarn around your finger until the yarn looks a good size.  I just eyeballed it, but I probably twisted the yarn about 70-100 times.

When the pom pom looks right, cut the yarn leaving about 6 inches of a tail.  You will then push the tail through your two fingers and pull it out the other side.

Bring the tail up on top of the yarn and push it through the top of your two fingers.  Pull it tight (this is important!).

Now, gently slide the yarn off of your fingers, making sure to keep the yarn pulled tight and kept across the middle (this was a little tricky, but you can do it!).

Knot the tail and wrap the remaining tail across the other middle, this will form a plus sign.  Pull it tight and knot it.  This will form four sections.  Tie another knot securing the yarn.

Next, grab some sharp scissors.  I used my fabric scissors (aka:  “if anyone uses these for anything other than fabric they will be in HUGE trouble” scissors).

Begin cutting the loops apart in each section.  Make sure you do not cut the tied tail.  We only had this happened once, but it’s important to remember.

Continue cutting all of the loops.  Once finished, it will not look very good and you’ll wonder if you did it right!  You did.  I promise.

The pom pom just needs some fluffing.  Shake it, separate the pieces and try to fluff it out as best as you can.

Once your little ball of yarn is all fluffed out it’s time for a haircut!  This is when you will see your pom pom begin to take shape.

Trim the yarn pieces until they are all nice and even.  I like to cut them fairly short, but not to short.

Play around with it a little bit and you will find the style you like.  My daughters kept theirs a little more long, it’s all personal preference.

That’s it!  Your pom pom is done!  Isn’t it cute????  The first one takes the longest…..to be honest, I threw away my first five (or was it ten????).

But, once I had a little practice I was able to whip them up much quicker.

Stick some googly eyes on those pom poms and make little monsters for your kids, OR you can string it together to form a cute garland.  I chose the garland.

Using your pom poms to make a garland is really quick and simple!

Gather Your Supplies

To make your pom pom garland you will need to first gather a few supplies.  You will need:

  • Yarn Pom Poms
  • String

After browsing through my house unable to find a string for my garland I resorted to the garage (I was refusing to spend money on this project!).

I found some string in my husbands stash of “stuff” and it worked really well.  Twine or even embroidery thread will work great too.

How To Make A Pom Pom Garland

First, tie a knot at the end of your string and use the string to thread a needle.

You will then stick your needle right through the middle of your pom-pom, pull it along the string until it reaches the knot, and continue until your garland is at the desired length.

Knot off the end and you are done!  You can hang your yarn pom-pom garland around your house, but we came up with a different idea.

We decided to decorate one of our little Christmas Trees as a “valentine tree.”  We have been making little crafts for it all month and decided this pom pom garland would be the perfect addition!

Let me know if you make a pom pom garland!  I would love to hear how it went.

Easy Easter Craft for Preschoolers: Egg Sun Catcher

February 27, 2020 By: Sweet Frugal Life8 Comments

Make this fun Easter craft with your kids today!

I found the perfect easy Easter craft for preschoolers!  My son and I had so much fun making it together, and I am so excited to share it with you!  The Egg Sun catcher is hanging up in our window right now and I love seeing the bright colors of it every day.

This project is so easy and I just used items I already had around the house.  I LOVE when that happens!

The colors of the egg can easily be customized using any of your favorite colors.  I did this craft with my preschooler, but it would also be great for a toddler to help them practice fine motor skills!

Gather Your Supplies

First, gather your supplies.  You will need:

  • Tissue Paper:  I just grabbed all my spring colors from the tissue paper I already had at home.  You can find some for cheap at the Dollar Tree.  Let your child choose their favorite colors!
  • Contact Paper:  One roll of contact paper will last a long time and is fun for laminating things by hand or other fun little craft projects.
  • Scissors
  • Paper Hole Punch
  • String, yarn, whatever you have on hand to hang the egg with
  • Egg Pattern (I printed my pattern from clip art on the computer)

Egg Sun Catcher Tutorial

Now that you have your supplies it’s time to cut small squares out of your tissue paper.  These do not need to be exact, just small squares will do.  This is great practice for your child to use scissors!

After you have a nice pile of tissue paper squares it’s time to get your contact paper ready.

Cut two square pieces from your contact paper, make sure they are large enough for your egg.

Set one of the contact pieces aside and pull off the backing of the other piece and lay it sticky side up on the counter top.

Next, let your child place the tissue paper squares onto the sticky side of your contact paper.  Make sure to overlap the tissue paper and fill up the entire square of contact paper.

Once you have your contact paper covered with the tissue paper you will pull off the backing of your second sheet of contact paper.

Carefully lay the two contact sheets together with both sticky sides together, sandwiching the tissue paper.

Cut Out The Egg

Now it’s time to cut out your egg.

Use your egg pattern to trace the egg onto the contact paper.  Cut along the tracing lines. and then cut along the tracing.

Once the egg is cut out you can use your hole punch to poke a hole in the top of the egg.

Loop your string through the hole and your Easter Egg Sun Catcher is ready to hang in your window!

My son has a short attention span so he loves doing these quick and easy projects with me.  Now if only the snow would melt and then spring would really be here!
