Yarn Hearts: An Easy Valentine Craft for Kids

An Easy Valentine Heart Craft for Kids!

A friend shared a brilliant idea with me the other day!  She said she uses a small Christmas tree for Valentines Day; instead of decorating it with Christmas ornaments she has a little box of Valentines decorations that she brings out every February and her kids get to decorate a Valentines Tree.  I thought this would make a fun valentine craft for kids.

So, I got to work putting together my own valentine tree.  I already had a small tree that I use for Christmas each year, the only problem is that I didn’t have any decorations for the tree….and I did NOT want to buy any.

We got to work crafting.  First, we made a few hearts out of beads and pipe cleaners.  They were so easy, just stick beads on a pipe cleaner and shape it as a heart.  Done and done!

Next, we made this darling Pom-Pom Garland.  I loved it so much and I can’t wait to make more!  You can find the tutorial here.

And last, but not least, we put together these Yarn Heart Ornaments.  They were SO fun to make and easy enough for my 6 year old to join in.  I love the projects that all three kids can enjoy together!

Yarn Hearts Tutorial

First, you need some cardboard hearts.  I grabbed a box from my large stash of amazon boxes and cut out a few hearts.

Choose your favorite yarn color.  Here is one of my favorite yarn brands.  Use a little bit of tape to attach the yarn to the cardboard heart.

Now for the fun part.  Just start wrapping your yarn around the heart.  Try to wrap it in different angles to make the design interesting.  It wasn’t easy to get all of the small nooks and crannies, but we kept working it and was able to get the entire heart covered.

When your cardboard heart is all covered and looks just right tie a small knot and cut off your excess yarn.  I tucked the knot underneath some yarn to try to hide it, which seemed to work well!

And guess what!  You are done!  That’s it!  We attached a few ornament hooks through the yarn and hung it up on our Valentines Day Tree.

I just love how these crafts and little tree turned out, and what’s even better….my kids love it!  They are so proud that they helped make all of the decorations; and seeing my kids happy faces is the best kind of valentine gift I could ever receive!

How to make edible Peanut Butter Play Dough.

One of the easiest way to entertain my kids is by making a big batch of play dough.  It’s so easy to whip up and will entertain my kids for hours.  Sometimes we will switch up the original playdough and make this peanut butter playdough recipe instead!  My kids love when I make edible peanut butter playdough.  It basically gives me “best mom ever” status for a whole hour!  😉

I was introduced to this Peanut Butter Play Dough Recipe years ago in a college Child Development class.  I immediately fell in love with it and the concept of using this recipe as a sensory activity for kids.  They can touch, see, smell, and even taste it!  This is a perfect activity to help kids learn about their 5 senses.

My kids seriously ask me to make this recipe all the time.  I’m pretty sure it’s because they are allowed to eat it….but oh well!  I love having them help me mix up this easy three ingredients recipe and then spend hours creating and playing.

One of the best parts of this recipe is that it only takes three ingredients, and I always have them at home (I love when that happens!).  Seriously, all you have to do is dump the powdered sugar, peanut butter and honey into a bowl and stir.  You’ll have homemade play dough ready in less than 10 minutes!

Easy Playdough Recipe Tutorial

To make this easy playdough recipe you will need to first mix 1 cup water, 2 Tbsp oil and a few drops of food coloring together in a pot over medium heat for a few minutes.

I always let my kids choose their favorite color for the playdough, and today my preschooler chose the color green (this is his favorite part!).

Next, add 1 cup flour, 1/2 cup salt and 1 tsp cream of tartar to the pot.  Stir continually over medium heat.  You will want to keep stirring the mixture until the playdough begins to form a ball.

It doesn’t look pretty right now, but I promise, it will!  Take it out of the pan and begin kneading with your hands.  The playdough will be hot at first, but it will cool down fairly fast.

Keep kneading until the playdough becomes smooth.  This will only take a few minutes and then your kids can start playing!

All that’s left to do is pull out all your cookie cutters and silverware and enjoy a fun frugal afternoon playing with your sweet kids!

This playdough will stay fresh in your fridge for a few weeks.  Making it perfect for multiple uses and playdough time!
