How To Stretch Meals

March 4, 2022 By: Sweet Frugal Lifecomment

Easy ways to stretch your meals so you can spend less on groceries.

One of the biggest budget busters in most households is the grocery budget.  There is no denying the fact that food is expensive.  However, there is good news!  Groceries is one category in your budget that you can lower!  It definitely takes a little bit of extra work and effort, but it can be done.  There are a few different ways to lower your grocery expenses, and one of my favorites is learning how to stretch meals.

What Does It Mean to Stretch Meals?

Stretching meals simply means to make the food that you have last longer, feed more people and prevent waste.  It’s really easy to do too!  All it takes is a little more planning and creativity, but each of the following tips are so easy!

Here are 10 ways you can stretch meals so you can save more money.

1.  Meal Plan

A smart meal plan is the first step to stretching meals.  When you make a meal plan, try to plan meals that will use the same ingredients.  This is an easy way to reuse ingredients before they go bad.

For Example:  Buy one head of lettuce and plan three meals that week you can use the lettuce for.  Or buy a rotisserie chicken from the store and meal plan several meals for chicken, like I did here.  These meals might be Chicken Alfredo, Chicken Noodle Soup, Chicken Pot Pie, etc.  Here’s how I use one Roast Beef for three meals.  It follow the same plan, buy once and use three times so it doesn’t go to waste.

2.  Use Less Meat

Meat is one of the most expensive parts of the meal.  Stretch the meat out for more meals by using less than the recipe calls for.

For Example:  If you are using a recipe that calls for 1 lb. of hamburger meat, use 3/4 lb. instead.  You probably won’t even notice the difference in your meal.  You can then use that extra 1/4 lb. hamburger for another meal.

3.  Souper Tuesday

Soup is so cheap to make and an easy meal to stretch!  I love making a huge pot of soup when I feed large groups or as a way to feed our family for several meals.

Consider turning Tuesday dinner into, “Souper Tuesday.”  This will be the day each week when you will make soup for dinner.  The pot of soup that you make should last your family for several meals.  You can even freeze the leftover soup to use for a later meal.  Just make sure to use it within the next 3 months.

  • Freezing Tip:  Freeze broth based soups simply by pouring it into a Ziploc freezer bag.  Squeeze out all of the air, seal tight and place in your freezer.  This will stay fresh for 3-6 months.  To thaw:  place frozen soup in fridge and let it defrost overnight.  Warm it up over the stove and enjoy!

Get creative with your soups!  Most soups can be made just by tossing together a few ingredients you already have in your pantry.  A little bit of chicken, broth and veggies will make a fantastic soup!

4.  Include More Side Dishes

Usually the main dish is the most expensive.  You can stretch the main dish out by adding more sides to your meal.

Try using a variety of side dishes and mix it up daily to keep the meals more interesting.

A few of our family favorite side dishes are:

  • Homemade French Bread
  • Fruit Salad
  • Green Salad
  • Roasted Vegetables
  • Potatoes
  • Rice

Each of these ideas are budget friendly (especially if you shop sales) and very filling.  Encourage your family to take a few sides along with the main meal.  This will fill the family up quicker, making you able to use your main dish for a few other meals throughout the week.

5.  Use a Filler

Try adding a “filler” ingredient to your recipes.  A “filler” is just a cheaper ingredient, one that the recipe doesn’t call for, that you add to a meal to make it more filling and bigger.

A few of our favorite fillers are: pasta, rice and beans.

Beans

A can of beans is one of the cheapest and easiest ingredient to add to recipes as a filler.  All it takes is opening up a can!

You can use any of your favorite kind of beans, we prefer black beans, pinto beans or refried beans.

These can be added to a wide variety of meals including:  enchiladas, soups, or tacos.

Pasta

Pasta is cheap and filling.  You can easily add it to soups to make them more filling.

Rice

Rice can be mixed with beans or meat to use in burritos, tacos, or enchiladas.  This is also a great filler for soups!

Use your imagination and get creative when choosing fillers!

6.  Meatless Monday

Try incorporating less meat into your meals.  We do this by having Meatless Monday each week.  This is one day of the week when I prepare something, well, meatless!

A few of our favorite Meatless Monday dinners are:

  • Broccoli Cheese Soup
  • Homemade Mac n Cheese
  • Bean Burritos
  • Pasta Bake
  • Spaghetti

Grab a few of these recipes in Mel’s Home Cooking Recipe Book!

7.  Appropriate Servings

Many of us (definitely me!) eat larger servings than is necessary.  Stretch your meals by eating smaller portions.  It’s important to eat enough, just focus on not over eating and this will help you save more for the next meal.

Our eyes might want two large spoonfuls, but remind yourself that one large spoonful will be enough to fill your hunger.

  • Tip:  Eat on smaller plates to help keep the portions smaller!

8.  Meal Prep

Meal prepping in advance is an easy way to ensure you have smart portions for every meal.

I like to set one day aside each week as my Meal Prep day.  This is the day when you will cook your meat, chop your vegetables, and separate all the ingredients into daily meals.

When we prepare the food in advance it’s much easier to plan out the servings and ensure nothing goes to waste.

Store your dinner portions in Tupperware, Ziploc bags or, I really like these containers.

9.  Add Water

Stretch meals by adding water to the recipe.  Water is FREE, making it the cheapest ingredient you own!

You can add extra water to soups or stews to stretch the broth a little further.  Your family won’t even notice the difference, and your soup will last much longer!

10.  Save All Leftovers

All food can be reused!  Try to get into the habit of saving any and all leftovers from each meal.  This food can all be used for a different meal in different ways.

Freeze It

If you don’t think you will be able to use up the leftovers within the next few days you can easily freeze it for later.  Just let the food come to room temperature, put it in a Ziploc bag, get out all of the air, and toss it in the freezer.

For a full list of what can be frozen check out this list from Lauren Greutman.

Reuse It

If you have enough leftovers for another meal, consider saving it to eat the next day.  We love to have leftovers for lunch, and sometimes even dinner.

Re-purpose It

If you don’t have enough extra food for an entire meal, add the leftovers with some other ingredients to make a complete dinner.  You can turn most leftovers into a soup or casserole, simply by mixing it with something else!

We love to use leftover taco meat for soup the next day.  I just mix the taco meat with some cans of beans, tomatoes and water and wah-lah-Taco Soup!

In Conclusion

Try think outside the box when you are stretching meals.  There are so many different ways you can save money on groceries and make the food you have at home last longer!  You can do it!

12 Products Worth Buying To Save Money In The Long Run

November 3, 2021 By: Sweet Frugal Life2 Comments

Items Worth Purchasing To Save More Money In The Long Run

If you are a long time reader, you know I am ALL about looking for ways to cut expenses, spend less and save a few bucks.  However, there are times when SPENDING money is actually the best way to be frugal.  Today I am going to share some of my favorite products worth buying to save money.

How Can Spending Money On A Product Save Money?

I know it doesn’t really make sense!  Spend money to save money!  But with some products it actually really really works!  I like investing in quality products that will:

  • Reduce the cost of a bill or budget category I already spend money on.
  • Last a long time without needing to be replaced.
  • Reduce the amount of reusable products I already regularly buy.

If the one time expense will continually reduce my regular expenses for years to come, it is worth the money for me.  Below are some of the products I recommend buying to help save money in the long run.

products to buy to save money - items that will save you money in the long run

Products Worth Buying To Save More Money

1.  Tempered Glass Screen Protector

One of my very favorite purchases ever has been my tempered glass screen protector for my cell phone.  It is worth every penny and then some!

Our cell phones go almost everywhere with us!  Which is great, but also a little risky that they will break.!  Cell phones are expensive and cost a lot of money to be fixed.

If you cover your screen with a tempered glass screen protector all you will have to place is the protector instead of the entire phone, saving you huge bucks if your screen ever cracks (which let’s be honest…..happens).

2.  Rechargeable Battery Charger

Investing in a rechargeable battery charger is a great way to save money on batteries.

When we bought a Wii years and years ago for our kids, we bought a rechargeable battery charger and batteries to go with it.  We have used those batteries so many times for Wii remotes, the cost was well worth it!

3.  Makeup Eraser

My friend gifted me a makeup eraser a couple of years ago, and I have never looked back since!  These microfiber cloths easily clean off your daily makeup with only the help of some warm water.  I no longer have to buy disposable makeup remover cloths or products.  Yay!

The best part?  It’s reusable!  So, wash your cloth and reuse again and again.  Great for the environment, and your pocket book!

4.  Drying Rack

A drying rack is another smart purchase to save money in the long run.  Air drying clothes will extend the life of your clothing and it saves you money on electricity bills by not having to run your dryer as often.

Consider purchase an indoor drying rack that can be easily tucked away, or an outdoor retractable clothesline (I’ve had my eye on this one for a while now!).

5.  Reusable Sandwich Bags

Rather than buying disposable ziplock bags over and over again, consider buying resusable sandwich bags instead!  You can use them to pack lunch boxes, or to freeze leftovers for another meal.  That’s right, they are even freezer safe!  These are a great product to help you save more and spend less!

6.  Produce Storage Containers

One of the most important ways to save money on groceries is to prevent food waste.  Spending a little bit of money on high quality produce storage containers will help produce to last longer so that you won’t be throwing away food that you spent your hard earned dollars on.

7.  Dryer Balls

I recently switched from dryer sheets to dryer balls and I keep wondering why I didn’t make the switch sooner!  They have been so efficient in keeping my clothing soft and static free.

Dryer balls can be used over and over again, cutting out the need to buy dryer sheets!  Plus, dryer balls helps dry your clothes faster and more efficiently which will save you in high energy costs.  Try them and let me know what you think!

8.  Hair Clippers

When my husband and I first got married many many many years ago I bought a $15 set of hair clippers.  Over the next ten years those $15 hair clippers have saved us roughly $750 on hair cuts!

I am NOT a professional hair cutter.  As a matter of fact, I’m really not that good at cutting hair.  But, I kept practicing, trying and watching YouTube videos until I became more confident in my abilities.

This small investment has been a huge money saver to our family.  Here is a similar pair of clippers with great reviews.

9.  LED Light Bulbs

As your old incandescent light bulbs burn out, replace them with LED light bulbs.  The cost upfront is more expensive, but so worth it in the long run.  LED light bulbs last longer and uses less electricity than a traditional light bulb.  Check out this Light Bulb Showdown article to see the huge life time savings in this one simple change.

10.  Reusable Water Bottle

We all know that drinking water is great for our health.  But, buying disposable water bottles again and again costs a lot of money.  Fortunately, we can drink water without having to buy disposable water bottles!

Instead of wasting plastic and money, invest in a reusable water bottle and fill it up with water from home!  I love buying items that I know I can use over and over again, for, well, forever!  Here is a great priced insulated water bottle with fabulous reviews!

11.  Menstrual Cup

Alright ladies, this ones for you!  Quit wasting your money on disposable feminine care and invest in a menstrual cup!

This DivaCup is reusable and has FANTASTIC reviews.  I know it might feel a little different at first, but I recommend you try it!  You might like it more than you think!  And it will save you money in the long run!

12.  Digital Antennae

One of the best things we did for our budget was to cancel our cable TV and buy a digital antennae.  A digital antennae is a one time cost for free monthly TV.

True, it doesn’t have as many channels as cable TV does, but it gives you access to your local television channels for free!  Which means you won’t miss the news, big sporting events or the popular current TV shows.

Spending Money To Save Money

Sometimes you have to spend a little bit of money to save money!  These are all products worth buying to save money, but I might have missed a few!  What else would you add to this list?

Best Financial Books For Beginners

November 1, 2021 By: Sweet Frugal Life4 Comments

Best Books On Money Management.

One of the things I most recommend to others who are trying to learn how to manage their money is to read more money books.  I have spent years studying and researching how to live frugally and I’m excited to share the best financial books for beginners with you!

Over ten years ago I randomly stumbled across a few money management books at the public library, I have always enjoyed self help books, so decided to bring one home with me.  I walked out of the library holding the Total Money Makeover  by Dave Ramsey and my life was forever changed.

I have always been somewhat frugal….but I didn’t ever have control of my money, and my budget was suffering because of it.

If I’m being honest……I used shopping as a hobby, I didn’t have a budget, I spent what we earned without a second thought, and I had no clear plan for a successful financial future.

After reading the Total Money Makeover my mindset completely shifted.  I realized what was possible, with enough self control, and how to prepare my family for a happy future.  This blog wouldn’t even exist with that book!

In the words of Dr.Seuss, “The more that you read the more things you will learn.  The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.”  Reading is powerful!

If you are looking for encouragement, advice, or direction about money, “look in a book” (anyone else remember watching reading rainbow?).  Here are 9 of the best financial books for beginners!  I hope they will benefit you as much as they have helped me.

Best Money Books

1.   The Total Money Makeover by Dave Ramsey

Of course number one on my list is the Total Money Makeover by Dave Ramsey.  As mentioned above, this book changed my life, and I believe it can change yours too!

Dave Ramsey does a fantastic job explaining exactly what you need to do to manage your money.  I love his straightforward real talk and easy to understand concepts.  If you are new to money management and have debt you are trying to pay off then this is the book for you!  It was written for the novice, and the steps are easy to follow and understand.

Be sure to check out Dave Ramseys website here for even more amazing info!

2.  Rich Dad, Poor Dad by Robert Kiyosaki

Rich Dad, Poor Dad by Robert Kiyosaki blew my mind, for reals!  This book will change your mindset about what it means to be rich and what it takes to become rich.

If you are looking for a book about how to be more frugal, this is not the book for you.  But, if you are looking for ways to be financially successful, to grow a business, and earn a higher income, this is the book for you.  It is so motivating and makes become rich feel achievable!

3.  You Need a Budget by Jesse Mecham

I am obsessed with all things You Need a Budget!  Their budgeting program is my favorite thing ever, and this book has helped propel our finances forward.  I like to brag that I loved YNAB before YNAB was even cool….because I really have been with them since the very beginning!

In his easy to understand writing Jesse Mecham outlines four rules to financial success.  These rules will change your money mindset and help you understand the big picture of budgeting.

And, while we are on the subject, if you are looking for good budgeting software be sure to give the You Need a Budget website a look.  It does cost money to use, but it’s been worth it for me!

4.  The Millionaire Next Door by Thomas J. Stanley and William D. Danko

The Millionaire Next Door is one of the best books about money for beginners.  It debunks the myth that the only way to be wealthy is to be born into it or to earn an extremely high income.  This book explains exactly how everyone, no matter what they were born into, can become a millionaire.

It’s not easy and it takes planning and sacrifice, but it is possible!  I love the motivation that this book gives me to reach my dreams!  Anything is possible!

5.  Money Master the Game by Tony Robbins

Oh, I just love Tony Robbins.  He has such a great way with words and always motivates me.  In his book, Money Master the Game, Tony Robbins teaches his 7 steps to financial freedom.  It’s packed full with so many great tips and advice.

My favorite parts of this book is when Tony Robbins shares his knowledge about investing.  Investing can feel a little intimidating to the beginner (or is that just me….), but he teaches it in a way that is not only easy to understand but practical to implement.  After I read this book I felt like I could actually start investing with confidence!

6. The Richest Man In Babylon by George S. Clason

One of the very best financial books for beginners is The Richest Man In Babylon.  It gives super easy to follow principles to help everyone save money and build wealth.  The author, George S. Clason, uses fictional characters and short stories to teach each of these principles, which makes the book a very fun read.

This is a very relatable book, perfect for anyone who knows very little about money, or someone who feels like they know it a lot.  The perfect book for financial beginners!

7.  The Little Book of Common Sense Investing by John C. Bogle

This is one of the very best books out there when it comes to learning investing.  In the Little Book of Common Sense Investing John C. Bogle teaches everything that you need to know to start investing in the stock market.

He uses a conservative, long term approach to give you the tools you need to start investing today.  If you have been wanting to start investing, but haven’t been sure where to start….start with this book!

8.  The Simple Path to Wealth by JL Collins

The Path to Wealth is one of my all time favorite books about money for beginners.  It covers all the personal finance topics from debt to investing and everything in between.   JL Collins writing is so easy to follow and fun to read, he makes money feel easy!  (which is not an easy thing to do).

This book is for you if you are new to personal finance and are looking for a good road map to get started.

9.  The 9 Steps to Financial Freedom by Suze Orman

I just love Suze Orman, I know her style isn’t for everyone, but I truly enjoy her straight to the point method of teaching.

The 9 Steps to Financial Freedom teaches you more than just the personal finance basics, and that is why I love it so much!  Suze Orman teaches you to have a healthy relationship with your finances and helps you to understand your feelings and emotions attached with money.

There is more to smart spending and frugal living than knowing the numbers, and this book will help you understand just that!  If you struggle with emotional spending read this book!

In Conclusion

There are literally thousands of great money books for beginners out there.  Try to set a goal to read one or two of them each month.  I really think you will be surprised at just how great of a difference they will make in your life!

How To Save Money On Preschool

January 11, 2021 By: Sweet Frugal Lifecomment

Frugal preschool hacks.

The Preschool age of raising kids is just one of my very favorite ages!  It is so much fun!  I love the sweet innocence, and the fact that their cute personalities are starting to show.  The only negative to these years is that paying for preschool tuition can get expensive!  Preschool is optional for many families, but for those of us who want our kids in school before elementary school I am sharing a few ways to save money on preschool!

Why Is Preschool Important?

I understand that not everyone feels the need to have their children in preschool, and that’s OK!  My belief is that there are a million different ways to be an EXCELLENT parent and that there is NOT a one size fits all when it comes to raising kids.

We decided to enroll each of my three kids in preschool for a variety of reasons, I’ll share a few of them below:

  • Learn important social skills.  I really wanted my kids to get practice interacting with kids their age, so they could learn how to share, say sorry, and be a good friend.
  • Practice being in a structured learning environment.  Another important part of preschool for me is giving the kids practice sitting still, following directions and listening to a teacher.
  • Give them a head start on kindergarten and reading readiness.  I really love that preschool gave my kids a head start on reading and math skills.  It helped me feel more confident when sending them to kindergarten.

money saving tips for preschool - budget friendly preschool ideas

How To Save Money On Preschool

Alright, now let’s get to the nitty gritty!  Here are a few ways you can cut costs on preschool tuition!

1.  Compare Prices

An important step to saving money on preschool costs is to shop around.  Make sure you spend time, research, and effort to compare prices of multiple preschools in your area.

I recommend asking for preschool recommendations on Facebook Marketplace and from a few good friends.  Once you have a list of possible preschools call each of them to find out more information.

As you are shopping around make a list of each preschool including their tuition price, preschool times, and pros and cons of each one.  This will help you when making the decision of which school is best for your child.

I’ve found that the preschools done out of the home tend to be the most budget friendly.

2.  Try A Public Preschool

Most preschools are private, but there are also many public preschools available if you look for them.  These public preschools are usually made available to low income families or kids with developmental delays, but they will sometimes accept others who don’t qualify….so make sure you ask!

The best way to find public preschools in your area is to spend some time googling local public preschools to see if you can find some.  I also recommend calling your local school district to see if they offer any public preschools.

3.  Offer To Volunteer

Many years ago, when my oldest was in preschool and money was tight, I asked her preschool teacher if there was anything I could do to help in the classroom in exchange for a discount on preschool tuition.

She was so nice and excited about my request!  It was truly a good situation for both of us.  Immediately I was put to work copying papers and cutting out shapes for craft projects.  In return she gave me a 25% discount.  Yay!  She’s the best!

In the years since then I have heard from other friends of preschool teachers offering similar discounts in exchange for help in the classroom.  Remember that not every teacher will agree to this request, but it never ever hurts to ask!

4.  Form A Preschool Co-op

Instead of paying for preschool, form a co-op with a few other moms and teach preschool yourself!  A preschool co-op not only saves money, it is also fun!

Here’s how it works:

  • Find 4 other moms who have children the same age as your preschool child.
  • Host a meeting with the other moms where you can discuss curriculum, routines, and expectations for the preschool.
  • Assign each mom one week every month to teach the preschool kids at her home.

I’ve found it works best when everyone is following the same routine and curriculum to help the preschoolers get use to the structure of a classroom, which is why the meeting is so important to have.

I did a preschool co-op with a few friends for my youngest child and I loved it!  It was such a fun way to interact with my son and his friends.  Plus, it was free!

Our preschool co-op schedule looked something like this:

  1. Review the calendar and date.
  2. Discuss the weather.
  3. Lesson focused on a color, number, or letter.  The lessons were pre-assigned to each mom before the year started.
  4. Free play time.
  5. Snack time.
  6. Story time.

Each mom was also asked to choose and host one field trip during the year.  My field trip was in the fall, so we toured my dad’s potato cellar and talked about potato harvest!  It included a ride in a tractor, so the kids were all in heaven!

5.  Homeschool Preschool

If a preschool co-op isn’t your thing, you might want to consider teaching your child preschool lessons at home yourself.  This is what I did for my middle child, and we both loved it!  We still talk about our time together spent doing preschool.

A homeschool preschool often works best when you set a specific day and time to do school.  This really helps to keep you and your child on schedule. Next you should spend some time planning out your daily curriculum.  It might help to look up kindergarten readiness tips to help you decide what to focus on while you teach.

There are also many free printables offered on pinterest that you can use for your homeschool preschool.  It really is possible to teach preschool at home!

In Conclusion

Raising kids is expensive, but there are steps we as parents can take to help alleviate some of those huge costs.  If you are wanting a way to prepare your child for kindergarten, without breaking the bank, try a few of these suggestions!

I have done most of them and saw first hand how helpful they can be in decreasing the high cost of preschool tuition.  If I can save money on preschool, then you can too!
