Flour Tortillas

How to make soft, flour tortillas at home.

  • 5 cups flour
  • 1 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 2 cups boiling water


  • In a bowl, stir together the flour, salt and baking powder.
  • With a pastry cutter, cut in the shortening.
  • Add boiling water and mix together well.
  • Knead dough for a few minutes and then separate it into 12 equally sized balls.
  • Roll each ball out until thin and flat.
  • Fry tortilla in a hot frying pan for 1-2 minutes, until it's just starting to brown.
  • Flip over and fry the other side for 1 minute.
