Best Side Hustles For Stay At Home Moms

September 2, 2025 By: Sweet Frugal Lifecomment

How to earn money from home!

I have been so lucky to have been able to spend the past 20 years at home with my kids.  Being a stay at home mom is a job I always dreamed of, and I am definitely living my dream!  But, as my kids have grown older and I have had more free time, I have been looking for ways to earn a little extra income, without having to give up my time with my kids.  If you are in a similar situation as me, wanting to stay home with your kids, but are also wondering how to earn money from home, this article is for you!  I brainstormed a list of the best side hustles for stay at home moms, and I hope they help!

The best thing about this list is that these jobs are for anyone who wants to work part time out of their home.  Many of these can be done in the evenings or on weekends while you are still working a full time job.

This article contains affiliate links.  I will receive a commission off of purchases made through my links.

1.  Clean Businesses or Homes

A great way to make money as a stay at home mom is to hire yourself out to clean local businesses or homes.  Many businesses will need to be cleaned after office hours, which is perfect for stay at home moms because this mean you might be able to leave your kids at home with your husband once he gets home from work while you go clean.  This is also a good option for those needing to earn money after their day job is done.

You can easily market yourself on Facebook Marketplace, just post in a local group that you are available to clean and when.  There are also a few cleaning companies you could call and ask if they are needing another cleaner.

This is actually my side hustle.  I have been cleaning two AirBnb Rentals for the past year and actually really enjoy it!

I stick my earbuds in, listen to my favorite podcasts or a new book and clean away.  It’s good money and fairly easy work.  I’ve also been given permission to bring my kids with me, so I give them little jobs to help with and pay them for their help!  It’s been a great experience for all of us!

2.  Ebay Reseller

Do you like to thrift shop???  Why not turn that hobby into a part time job?  Look for brand name items at local thrift stores or garage sales and resell them on ebay.

Before buying anything remember to do a quick check on eBay to see how much money similar items are selling for, this should give you an idea of what is a good buy or not.

I’ve sold items here and there on eBay, but never consistently.  If you are interested in learning more, I found a fantastic article that can help get you started!

3.  AirBnb Hosting

I first learned about AirBnb Hosting from the lovely Jamie at Fly By The Seat of Our Pants.  Her family travels constantly, and they have learned to rent out their home using AirBnb while they are on vacation!  This has given them the ability to EARN money while they are on vacation!  I mean seriously, can it get any better than that????

I’ll be honest, when I first heard Jamie talk about letting strangers come stay at their house while they go on vacation, I was not on board.  But, the more I have learned from her, the more that I can see it is in fact a GREAT way to earn an extra income.  If you’re like me and have questions about how she makes it all work, check out her post Secrets of an AirBnb Host-FAQ of Renting our Home. She explains it all so well!

4.  VIP Kid

VIP Kid is currently one of the most popular work from home jobs, and for good reason!  The company is super easy to work with and hires most of their applicants!

This job sounds so fun because you get to sit at your computer while teaching English to kids all over the world!  If you are a teacher at heart, this is the job for you.

The best part is that all of the work is already done for you!  The lesson plans are all prepared, your job is just to teach it!

They do require you have some experience working with kids and a bachelors degree.  But!  It doesn’t matter what your degree is in!  (whoo!)

5.  Babysit Kids in Your Home

If you are already at home taking care of your own kids, why not offer to babysit a few other kids.  This is an easy way to earn an extra income, while doing what you would be doing anyways!

If a full time daycare feels like to much, consider just watching one child a couple of times a week.  I constantly see posts on Facebook Marketplace of parents wanting to find a part time sitter for their child.  Check there first!

6.  Blogging

Hello blogging! I fell in love with blogging last year when I decided, completely on a whim, to start this little blog.  I’ve always had a love of writing and being able to do that while being a full time stay at home mom felt like the perfect fit.

I’ve learned a lot over the past year and made a lot of mistakes at the same time.  But, you know what.  All of the ups and downs have been so worth it!  I love getting to do what I love from the comfort of my home.

Feel free to reach out to me if you have any questions about getting started blogging!  It’s a long road, made much easier with a support system.

7.  Open an Etsy Shop

Do you love to craft or create?  Consider opening an Etsy shop to sell your handmade items.  We all have the ability to create something to share with the world.

Maybe your shop would be crafts, or jewelry.  It might even be graphic design or printables….the sky is the limit!  Spend a few minutes searching through Etsy to get some ideas for your own shop.

8.  Teach a Service

Do you have a skill you could teach to others?  I bet you do!

A few years ago I was a piano teacher (until I retired for personal reasons).  I loved having the ability to pick my own schedule and teach right out of my home.

What skills could you teach to others?  Maybe you could teach music, sewing, gardening, art, or cooking.

It would be fun to create a summer camp and focus on teaching for a few weeks straight if you don’t want to commit to something long term.

You could even teach through Zoom, Skype, etc.

9.  Photography

Do you like to take pictures?  Why don’t you turn it into a business!  All of the photographers I use are stay at home moms, and they are fantastic!

This side hustle will require some upfront costs as you invest in a camera and possibly some equipment.  But, it might be worth it if this is something you feel passionate about.

Do some research online and learn about what it takes to start a photography business to help you decide if this is the right fit for you or not.

10.  Refurbish Old Furniture

Refurbishing old furniture might feel a little daunting at first, but once you get going with it it’s actually really not that hard!!

Search thrift stores, estate sales and garage sales for old furniture and when you find a cheap price on a nice piece, snatch it up.

The trick is to look for the POTENTIAL!  Try to see beyond the yellow oak stain, the scratches and nicks and imagine the beauty the furniture could be.  Be sure to BARTER if you’re at a garage sale (always).

You can find hundreds of YouTube video tutorials all about how to refurbish old furniture!

Once you’re done fixing it up, list the item for sale, Facebook Marketplace works great, and enjoy the profit you’ll make!

I actually LOVE buying from people who have fixed up old furniture.  I love the look of it, but don’t like putting in the work.  So, you never know….I just might be your first customer!  😉

11.  Become a Virtual Assistant

Becoming a virtual assistant is easy!  All you need is motivation and a computer!  Virtual assistants work from home while assisting companies with social media, blogging, editing, e-mailing and more.

This job is wide open to whatever the company needs from you to keep their business thriving.  I have heard SO many good things about being a virtual assistant, and have considered it myself!

If you are interested in becoming a virtual assistant, I recommend joining a few Virtual Assistant Facebook groups.  These will be a great resource for you to ask questions and network.

12.  Tutoring

There have been times (actually many, many times) when I would be willing to PAY someone to help my daughter with her math homework.  I just don’t do math!

If I knew of a stay at home mom who would be willing to tutor my daughter in this subject, that is a fee I would be willing to pay!  If you enjoy working with others and feel confident in a specific subject, this is a great way to earn extra money from home.

Consider signing up through a tutoring company, or hire yourself out online.  This is a great job for setting your own hours!

13. Alterting Clothing

If you know how to sew, I suggest hiring yourself out to alter clothing. You could sew on a button, patch holes, hem a dress, etc.

I always seem people looking to hire someone for sewing alterations! It’s something you can do when your kids are sleeping!

14. Freelance Writer

Another great side hustle idea for stay at home moms is to do some freelance writing.

You don’t need to have any experience or special skills to become a freelance writer. You just need to have a talent for writing, and a desire to earn money. This is a great side hustle for stay at home moms because you can write from anywhere, at the times that are most convenient to you! All you need is a computer and internet connection to get started!

I linked an article all about become a freelance writer to help you begin!

15. Make Deliveries

Sign up to make deliveries with companies like Uber Eats, DoorDash, Amazon Flex, Instacart, etc. With more and more people doing their shopping online, it opens up a lot of job opportunities to make these deliveries happen.

16. Pet Sitter

Do you love pets? You might consider hiring yourself out as a pet sitter! It’s the perfect way to play with some animals and earn money on the side.

Sign up for websites like Rover.com to try to find the best pet sitter jobs available in your area.

17. Travel Agent

You might enjoy being a travel agent from home! If you like to travel and research deals, help others by planning their vacation and enjoy the extra income you get to bring in at the same time!

In Conclusion

I truly believe that with the technology we have there are so many side hustles for stay at home moms, or anyone wanting to earn an extra income from home.  Do some research, find the right fit for you and your personality, and then get started making money!

Let me know if you have any questions, I am here to help!

Easy Tips To Save Money While Raising Kids

August 21, 2025 By: Sweet Frugal Lifecomment

How to parent without going broke.

One of the greatest things I have ever done in this life is becoming a parent. There is nothing that makes me happier than to spend time with my three kids and guide them through life. Unfortunately, parenting also comes with a lot of expenses, like SO many expenses! I do have good news though. There are some tips to save money while raising kids that can be super helpful!

We can give our kids a wonderful, happy, joy filled life….without having to spend a fortune! In this article I’ll share a few tips for saving money on kids clothing, toys, and activities, so that you can parent without going broke.

How To Save Money On Kids Clothes

I know that it can be so tempting to buy all of the cute, fresh and trendy kids clothing, but I promise, with a little work and practice you can find JUST as cute clothing, for a fraction of the price.  Here’s how!

1.  Buy Gently Used Clothing

Gone are the days where the only place to get gently used clothing is from your Great Aunt Lucy’s attic.  Now, we are so lucky to have many, many options to purchase used kids clothing.

Here are a few of my favorite places to shop for preowned kids clothing:

Garage Sales

Garage sales are one of my favorite places to buy used clothing for my kids.  They seem to always have the lowest prices, I can easily walk away with a huge bag of kids clothing for less than $10.

Here are a few tips for buying kids clothing at garage sales:

  • Search Facebook Marketplace the night before you want to visit the yard sales (usually Thursday night or Friday night) to find a few listings that are advertising kids clothing.  Only stop at the houses that have said they have kids clothes for sale.
  • Make a plan and map out which sales you want to go to first, and in which order.
  • Leave first thing in the morning to start yard sale shopping.  A good rule of thumb is to get to your first stop 5-10 minutes BEFORE it was advertised to open.  This gives you first pick of the clothing, which will also be the best quality!
  • Clothing at yard sales are negotiable.  Never be afraid to offer a lower price than marked.  The worst thing that can happen is they will say, “No”, but they almost always say “yes”.

Thrift Stores

Another great place to purchase preowned children’s clothing is at kids thrift stores.  These stores are picky about what items they purchase, meaning that you can feel confident you will be buying high quality clothing for a fraction of the price.

My favorite children’s thrift stores are Kid To Kid and Once Upon A Child.  Bonus!  You can sell your used kids clothing to these stores to earn money!

In addition to the kids thrift stores you can find some great deals at multi-purpose thrift stores such as, GoodWill, Deseret Industries, and Savers.

Facebook Marketplace

You can also find some great deals on used clothing on Facebook Marketplace.  It’s so easy to search for the exact size and gender you are looking for on Facebook Marketplace with their search and filter options.  If you don’t find what you are looking for when you first check, make sure to set up a notification so you can be alerted when it is listed.

2.  Host A Kids Clothing Swap

Most moms are looking for a cheaper option for kids clothing.  Find a group of moms, such as in your community, school, church, neighborhood, etc. and organize a Kids Clothing Swap together.  This way everybody wins!

I’ve participated in a few of these before and love the concept so much!

Here’s how it works:

  • Invite moms to join you for a Kids Clothing Swap.
  • Plan a day and time that will work for most people.
  • Everyone brings any used kids clothing that they want to swap.
  • Organize the clothing by sizes and gender.
  • Let everyone pick a few new-to-them pieces of clothing to take home.

Learn more about hosting a clothing swap here!

3.  Never Pay Full Price

Make a habit of only buying clothing if it’s on sale or discounted.  Here are a few tips for shopping clothing sales:

Sign Up For Store Emails

Sign up for store emails so that you will be the first one alerted to the current sales.  I am very picky about who I hand my email out to.  But, I have signed up for emails at just a few of my favorite kids clothing stores (Target, Children’s Place, Old Navy) because their sale emails have been so helpful in knowing when the sales are happening.

Shop Off Season

Like I mentioned earlier, shopping off season is a great way to get brand new clothing for a fraction of the price.  In spring, buy winter clothing for your kids to wear the next year and in the fall buy summer clothing.

Use Store Reward Programs/Cards

Many stores will offer points on purchases made through their store reward programs.  My favorite store reward programs are:

  • Target:  Sign up for their red card and get 5% off of each purchase made.  This makes for an even greater deal when you use the card on clearance items!
  • Kohls:  When you make purchases using your Kohls card you will be given 5% in rewards.  These rewards will then be turned into Kohls Cash to spend at the store.  You can use your Kohls cash with clearance items and coupons!
  • Children’s Place:  Another great store rewards program is Children’s Place.  When you sign up for the program you will begin receiving points each time you make a purchase.  These points can be redeemed for cash rewards that you can spend at the store.  Plus, they send out a birthday coupon each year!

Shop Online Deal Sites

You can find great deals on kids clothing when you shop at online deal websites.  A couple of my favorite sites for cute clothes and good discounts are Jane, Zulily, and Burkes Outlet.

Saving Money On Kids Toys

Kids want all the toys, and parents naturally want to give our kids everything that they want. I honestly remember buying my oldest a toy just because my husband and I thought it looked fun for US to play with….not because she actually needed it…..

Now, there isn’t anything wrong with buying a few toys to keep your kids entertained and to stimulate their minds and encourage imagination. But, try to shop using these tips to save money on kids toys.

1. Buy Quality Not Quantity

I know it can be tempting to always purchase the cheapest toy you can find. I’ve spent way to many shopping trips wandering through the Dollar Tree aisles grabbing a few $1 (remember those days….) toys and thinking we were all set for only a few dollars.

Unfortunately, those toys often broke quickly and the excitement of them wore off fast.

I’ve found that if you are willing to spend a little extra money on a quality toy then it will last much longer, and in the long run you won’t be spending as much money.

I suggest investing in some high quality wooden blocks, puzzles, and legos. These will last for years!

2. Rotate Toys

Another tip to save money on toys while raising kids is to rotate their toys.

Try to set up a system where certain toys only come out at certain times of the year.

For example, you could get four different storage bins and label them each for different months of the year; January-March, April-June, July-September, October-December.

Load each of your four storage bins with a variety of toys and then stash three of them away, but keep one out. Let your kids play with the toys in that bin for three months, until it’s time to stash those toys away and get out the next bin.

With every toy rotation your kids will have new toys that they had forgotten about to enjoy and play with!

3. Thrift Toys

Check Facebook Marketplace, thrift stores, and garage sales for gently used toys. Kids grow out of toys so quickly, you can often find great condition like new toys for a fraction of the price. Sometimes all they need is a little hand washing to be bright as new again!

  • Related: Cheap Staycation Ideas

4. Get Creative With DIY Toys

Use items that you have around your house to DIY toys! Kids can have so much fun using items you already have laying around the house.

I have a few ideas listed below:

  • You could turn a large empty box into a fort, a car, or just let them draw all over it!
  • Let your kids play with your pots and pans and form a marching bad.
  • Make homemade playdough or this edible peanut butter playdough for your kids to smash and create with.
  • Fill your sink with water and bubbles and let your kids play in the bubbles with plastic dishes.
  • Use toilet paper tubes to make binoculars or other fun activities. I have an entire list of things you can make with toilet paper tubes here!
  • Let your kids dress up in your clothes and play make believe!

There are so many things laying around your house that can be turned into a fun toy or activity for your kids! This is such a great tip for saving money when raising kids.

Saving Money On Kids Activities and Entertainment

A big part of raising kids is building family memories, and giving your children meaningful experiences. I know this has been something important to me and my husband as we have raised our family.

These type of activities can get very expensive. But, there are many things we can do to to make the best family memories while on a budget.

1. Take advantage of free community resources

Did you know that your community has loads of free activities and resources for your family? They do! A few of my favorites are:

  • Library. The public library is one of my favorite free community resources. They offer more than just books! Take a minute to check out your library and take advantage of all the free things they have available.
  • Parks. Take your family to the parks for picnics, to play on the playground, or for a fun family game of kickball.
  • Farmers Market. Take your kids for a stroll around your communities farmers market. They often have live music and free food samples, and just a lot of fun things to see.
  • Splash Pads. My city has a few free splash pads and my preschool and toddler aged kids loved them! It was a fun free family activity to help us get out of the house and make memories.
  • Free Museum/Zoo Days. Many museums or zoos will offer free or discounted days. Try to watch for those discounts days!

2. Invest In a Get Out Pass

A few years ago I was looking for ways that my family could affordably get out and enjoy local attractions, while also being able to stick to our budget. My oldest was just a couple of years away from graduating high school, and I knew she would be moving out and on her own soon.

I then learned about the Get Out Pass. Get Out Pass is an annual subscription service that gives you free access to a huge variety of fun local attractions.

You pay a one time yearly fee to get access to their user friendly app. Within the Get Out Pass app you can search through all of the attractions offered in your area. Choose where you want to go, show the pass in your app at the ticket counter, and you are let in for free! You can learn more about my experience with Get Out Pass here.

This app has been such a great way for my family to make more memories, and enjoy fun outings without having to pay full price for anything! We only have to go to one amusement park to get out moneys worth out of the app. It is a GREAT resource!

3. Be Frugal With Kids Sports

If your child wants to participate in sports, it can get very expensive fast. Here are a few tips to help you save money on kids sports, so they can still be apart of it without the huge price tag.

  • Shop thrift stores for sports equipment.
  • Try different leagues, some will be cheaper than others.
  • Carpool to practice, games and tournaments.
  • Volunteer in the league for a discount.

In Conclusion

You don’t need to spend a fortune to raise happy, thriving kids. I hope these tips to save money while raising kids will help you save money on clothes, toys and activities. Parenting on a budget is possible! Prioritize your spending, get creative, and stick to your budget! You got this!

Homemade Graham Crackers

My kids love when I make these homemade graham crackers.  They are easy, delicious and fun to customize the shape depending on the season!

Muffins

Muffins make for great snacks and are super quick and easy to whip up.  There are so many different types of muffins, a couple of our favorites are this Whole Wheat Banana Chocolate chip muffin recipe, and this Huckleberry Muffin Recipe.

Banana Bread

Don’t throw away bananas that are overripe, instead use them to make this quick banana bread recipe.  This recipe is so moist and easy.  It’s been a favorite in my family for a few generations!

Homemade Popsicles

Homemade popsicles aren’t just for summer, they make a great treat for all year round!  We love to make popsicles with juice, leftover smoothies, or pureed fruit, it really just depends on what we food we have in the fridge.

Smoothies are also a great way to use up any extra produce before it goes bad.   We freeze our popsicles in popsicle molds bought from Amazon!

Cake Mix Cookies

Stock up on box cake mix when it goes on sale and use it to make these 3 ingredient cake mix cookies.  They are easy to customize to meet your current craving, and super easy to throw together.

Partly Homemade Snacks For Kids

If you don’t have the time or energy to make homemade snacks from scratch, you might want to try some of these partly homemade snack ideas.  They will require a little bit of effort to throw together, but not as much as the ideas above.

Popcorn

Popcorn is a staple at my house.  It’s cheap, quick to prepare, and somewhat healthy.  I like to buy popcorn kernels and pop them over the stove in a little bit of oil, or you could buy a popcorn maker from Amazon for a decent price.

You can even change up the flavor by sprinkling on some yummy seasonings.  My kids especially love using parmesan cheese, salt, garlic powder or seasoning salt.

Cinnamon Toast

I learned about cinnamon toast from my husbands family and I’ve loved it ever since.  It’s super simple and the kids love it!

All you have to do is butter a slice of bread, sprinkle cinnamon and sugar on top and then bake it in the oven at 350 degrees for 10-15 minutes or until toasted.  It’s so good!

Cheese Quesadilla

Cheese Quesadillas are another cheap snack idea you can easily make at home.  They are delicious and quick to throw together for after school or when you’re rushing out the door.  Tortillas are fairly cheap to buy at the store, and even cheaper to make yourself.

Smoothies

I love stocking up on fresh fruit when it’s in season and then freezing  it in bulk.  The frozen fruit is perfect for making budget friendly smoothies.

Frugal bonus tip:  Pour any extra smoothie into a freezer container and store it in the freezer.  The frozen smoothie can be put into your kids lunchboxes for a quick and easy school lunch treat.  These are a huge hit with my kids!

Ants On A Log

Ants on a log is a fun and quick snack.  It’s made by spreading peanut butter on top of celery and then adding a few raisins!  Easy peasy!

Yogurt Parfaits

Making a yogurt parfait is easy.  Just layer yogurt with berries and then top it off with granola.  You could even try making your own yogurt (something I haven’t tried yet….) for even more savings!

Cinnamon Sugar Tortillas

Another quick to fix snack for kids is cinnamon sugar tortillas.  All you have to do is spread butter over the top of a flour tortilla and then sprinkle with cinnamon and sugar.  Bake the tortilla in the oven at 350 degrees for 10-20 minutes, or until golden and crispy.  Lastly, cut it into triangles using a pizza cutter and enjoy!  It’s one of my kids favorite after school snacks.

Fresh Fruit

One of our favorite frugal snacks is fresh fruit.  I like to watch sales at local grocery stores and buy whatever fruit in on sale.  I’ve learned that if I set fruit out on the counter, my kids are much more likely to grab it when they are looking for a snack.

Cheese & Crackers

Who doesn’t love cheese and crackers???  It’s a classic cheap snack and for good reason!  Stock up on crackers when they go on sale so you can help your kids enjoy cheese and crackers for an easy and frugal afternoon snack.

Raisins

Raisins are great to grab and eat on their own, or you can mix them with some nuts and chocolate chips for a cheap trail mix snack.  Make sure to buy the raisins in bulk for the best value.

Apples and Peanut Butter

We love the delicious apples and peanut butter snack at our house.  You can serve the peanut butter as an apple dip, or our favorite thing to do is slice the apples with a mandolin and top each slice with peanut butter and chocolate chips!  So yummy!!!

Cheerios

Ok, I know it’s basic, but cheerios is one of the best cheap snack ideas for kids because it’s not only frugal, it’s also quick, easy and loved by all!  Basically a win all around!  Make sure to watch grocery sales because cheerios are often marked down and available as a rebate with many cashback apps.

Cheese

Cheese is the perfect quick snack!  I like to buy a large block of cheese (Costco usually has the best prices) and cut it into individual slices/cubes for even more convenient snacking.

Applesauce

I love canning jars and jars of applesauce every fall.  I try to buy a couple of boxes of apples when the price drops to 50 cents/lb and turn them all into applesauce.

It’s true that not everyone loves to can, and that’s fine!  You can buy applesauce and it is still a frugal snack.

Pretzels

Pretzels are another cheap snack idea for kids.  They are perfect for a quick grab and go snack or as a lunchbox filler.  Pretzels are consistently one of the cheaper snack options in the grocery store, and almost always kid approved!  Yay!

Best Frugal Snacks

There are so many options when searching for the best frugal snacks!  We can feed our kids and their love for snacks without having to hurt our grocery budget.

Harry Potter Theme Party Ideas

September 15, 2022 By: Sweet Frugal Life16 Comments

Fun ideas for a Harry Potter birthday party!

My youngest turned 10 last week and he really wanted a Harry Potter themed birthday party.  As a huge Harry Potter fan myself, I was so excited to make his dreams become a reality!  One of the best things about throwing a Harry Potter birthday party is that there are just SO many fun activities you can do.  We had so much fun looking up ideas, planning the party together. and making “magic” happen.

The party was a huge success and I’m so excited to share all the nitty gritty details with you today!

Sweet Frugal Life is a participant in the Amazon Services LLC Associates Program, an affiliate advertising program designed to provide a means for sites to earn advertising fees by advertising and linking to Amazon.com.
I get commissions for purchases made through links in this post.

Harry Potter Party Decorations

The decorations for this party were very simple.  Basically all I did was splurge on a Platform 9 3/4 sign for our front door, and placed a few candles on the table (easy peasy is my jam).  The kids loved walking through the platform curtain and I’m so happy I bought it!  My son now has it hanging in his bedroom doorway.  It’s so cute!

platform 9 3/4 curtain on front door

Sorting Hat Cupcakes

The party started with our Sorting Hat Cupcakes.  This was probably my favorite part of the entire party!  I knew I wanted to sort everyone into a house, but I wasn’t sure exactly how to do that.  But, then I came across the idea to use Sorting Hat Cupcakes.

These were a huge hit and I’m so glad we went this direction.

But, I have to give a little disclaimer!  I am by no means a professional cake decorator or baker!  But, I do like trying to find budget friendly ways to make my kids dreams come true!  And fortunately, even though these cupcakes did not look perfect….my Harry Potter fan LOVED them….and that’s really all that mattered.

How To Make Sorting Hat Cupcakes

Sorting hat cupcakes are so easy to make!  Just bake cupcakes according to your favorite cake recipe instructions.

Once the cupcakes are baked and cooled, take a spoon and gently spoon out some of the middle of the cupcake.

Next, mix up 4 different colors of frosting.  One will be blue (for Ravenclaw house), one red (for Gryffindor house), another yellow (for Hufflepuff house), and the last green (for Slytherin house).  Which are, obviously, the different colors of the four houses in Harry Potter.  I really like this frosting recipe and then I used food coloring to make the different colors.

After you’ve made your frosting it’s time to fill the cupcakes.  Put a different color of frosting into the middle of each cupcake.

sorting cupcakes

Frost the cupcake with white frosting, making sure to cover the colored frosting.  Then, put half an Oreo on top of the frosting.  This will be the first part of your sorting hat.

Lastly, add a Hershey kiss on top of the Oreo half.  I had to put a little bit of frosting on the bottom of the kiss to make sure it stuck to the oreo.  And ta-dah!  Your sorting hat cupcakes are done!

After singing Happy Birthday I let each of the kids randomly choose a cupcake.  Whichever color of frosting was inside their cupcake was the house that they would be in.  They loved getting to take off the sorting hat to see which house they were in.  It was such a fun activity!

I forgot to take a picture of the kids finding out what house they are in, but here is a picture of the Great Hall before our guests arrived.

Harry Potter Party Activities

After the kids were sorted into their houses and finished eating their cupcakes we started the activities.  Each activity was in a different room and represented a different Hogwarts Class.  I pinned our class schedule onto a bulletin board to display and the kids loved looking to see the different classes for the day.  If you want this class schedule, you can grab it for free here:  Harry Potter Class Schedule Printable

History of Magic

Our first class was the History of Magic.  In the History of Magic class we learned about the famous wizard who defeated Voldemort….I’m talking about Harry Potter of course!

After learning about Harry Potter we played the game, Pin the Scar on Harry.  My husband drew the poster for me (because he is much more artistic than I am) and I printed out some lightning bolt scars.  Yay for team effort!  This game was a lot of fun, you just can’t beat the tried and true classic!

Potions

Next up on the schedule was Potions.  The kids absolutely LOVED this class and it turned out even better than I had imagined!

I wanted to do a simple science experiment, but with big results.  So, I decided to do an old favorite of mixing vinegar and baking soda together.  When you combine the vinegar and baking soda together it bubbles up really big.  The dish soap makes it more bubbly, and the rest of the ingredients are just for fun!  I printed up a potions card to display, and you can print it out for free here:   Harry Potter Growth Potion.

Unicorn Potion:  Vinegar

Dragons Blood:  Food Coloring

Spider Venom:  Dish Soap

Gillyweed:  Oregano (although the kids all let me know gillyweed is suppose to be slimy…you win some and you lose some)

Crushed Bones:  Baking Soda

To set up potions class, I bought these science mixing cups from Amazon.  Then I printed out labels for each of the ingredients and taped them to the cups.

Potions class was outside (because I knew it would be messy!).  Each party guest started with a small mason jar and a stirring stick (the stirring sticks came with the science mixing cups I had bought).

Then, we brought out a new ingredient one by one as they stirred it all together.   Make sure to add the baking soda last for the big surprise.  The entire solution will foam over the mason jars.  The kids were all shocked and surprised at the result!  It was a huge hit and fun to see their reactions!

Divinations

Next up was Divinations class.  This class was another huge hit!

To prepare in advance I made this fortune teller guide.

The night before the party I put a small drop of food coloring into 8 different plastic cups, one for each child coming.  The food coloring needs to dry completely before adding anything else to the cup, so doing this the night before is necessary.  Then, right before divination class began I filled the cups up with ice to hide the food coloring at the bottom.

I wanted to make this experience really fun for the kids.  So, I poured some sprite into a large bowl and then added a dry ice block to make it foggy.  The kids LOVED this!

I handed each of the kids one of the cups I had prepped earlier.  Then one by one I spooned sprite into each cup.  We had to wait a few minutes for the fog to clear but once it did the sprite had changed colors (thanks to the dried food coloring).  We were able to use the color in the cup and fortune teller guide to tell each of the kids their fortunes.  It was so fun!

Charms Class

After divination we went to charms class.  Earlier in the week my son had made wands for each of the party guests and we let everyone choose a wand for charms class.  I found a Wand Motion Chart from The Scrap Shoppe Blog and gave one to each kid.  Together we practiced a few charms and spells, and the kids had fun practicing the different wand motions.

Defense Against The Dark Arts

Last, but not least we went to Defense Against The Dark Arts class.  I thought it would be fun to have a pinata in this class for the kids to “battle.”  I found this spider pinata on Amazon and decided it would be perfect!  After coloring in the face (to make it more spooky) and filling it with candy we were ready to go!

Everyone got a turn to hit the spider with a bat, and then we let the birthday boy finish it off.  The kids loved grabbing the candy with their Harry Potter goody bag.

The Party Was A Hit

The kids had so much fun at our Harry Potter themed party.  I couldn’t have asked for it to go any better!  Let me know if any of these ideas helped you plan your own party!  I’d love to hear how they worked out.

How To Save Money On Diapers

February 22, 2022 By: Sweet Frugal Lifecomment

Here are a few ways to get baby diapers for cheap!

If you have a baby (or have ever had babies) then you know that buying diapers can be a huge expensive.  I remember being a first time mom (back, many, many years ago) and I couldn’t believe how quickly we went through a box of diapers.  Fortunately, there are some things you can do to get diapers for cheap!  Here are a few tips for how to save money on diapers, I hope they help all you parents out there save some money!

How To Know When You Are Getting A Good Deal

First, let’s go over what a good diaper price is!  It’s so important for you to know the going rate of diapers, so that when you find a good deal, you will know it’s the best price!

According to True Money Saver the current stock up price on diapers are:

Newborn: 13¢
Size 1: 14¢
Size 2: 16¢
Size 3: 19¢
Size 4: 22¢
Size 5: 25¢

The best way to compare current diaper prices is to calculate the price per unit.  A price per unit is the price that each individual diaper costs.

To calculate the price/unit you will divide the price of the diapers by the number of diapers in the box.

For example, if you are buying a newborn size box of diapers that costs $47.07 and have 198 diapers in the box you would use this equation:

47.07 divided by 198 = 23

So the price/unit of the newborn box of diapers is 23 cents per diaper.  If you look at the stock up prices above you will see that 23 cents/diaper is a little high, and not a great deal.

Tips To Save Money On Diapers

Now that you know the best prices to watch for when buying diapers, let’s go over a few ways to get those much needed diapers for cheap!

1.  Shop Sales

One of the best ways to save money on diapers is to buy them when they go on sale.

Here are a few tips for buying diapers on sale:

  • Baby sales typically happen between the months of February and September
  • Compare unit prices on diapers to know if the sale is actually the cheapest price (as discussed earlier)
  • Pair a coupon with a sale for the best deal
  • Scan receipts into cashback apps for rebates on diapers
  • Use the Flipp app to find weekly diaper deals

2.  Join Amazon Family

Did you know that you can get a 20% discount on diapers when you join Amazon Family through prime, and sign up for a diaper subscription??  Because you can!  Plus, you can even match the subscription discount with Amazon coupons for an even better deal.  And!  Prime membership always gives you free shipping!  This is a great deal for parents!

I’ve used Amazons subscription services a few times and love the convenience of them!  It’s so easy to set how often you want the products sent to you, and super easy to cancel when you don’t need the service anymore.

3.  Buy Generic

Store brand diapers are often much cheaper than name brand, but still a great quality.  Try a few different generic brands to find the ones that work best for you and your baby.  I highly recommend trying the Target brand!

Remember to pay close attention to price per unit to make sure the generic brand that you buy is cheaper than the name brands.

4.  Buy In Bulk

Another great way to get diapers for cheap is to buy them in bulk.  Again, calculate the price per unit when buying diapers, most of the time the bulk diapers will be cheaper, but not always.  It’s important to always double check!

Buying diapers in bulk is a great way to get name brand diapers for a much cheaper price.

5.  Use Coupons

One of my very favorite things to do is to pair a coupon with a sale.  This is the way to get your favorite items for dirt cheap!

Search regularly for diaper coupons to help you lower the price of your favorite brands (especially when you match it with a sale!).  You can find coupons on manufacturers websites, and coupon websites like coupons.com.

Another way to get coupons is by contacting the manufacturer directly and ask for them!  Send your favorite diaper brand an email asking if they have any free samples or coupons, and they will more than likely send you a few in the mail.  Yay!

6.  Try Cloth Diapers

I know (trust me, I know!), the idea of using cloth diapers is not always the most exciting option.  It requires a little more work and effort, but it can be a HUGE money saver!  According to this Forbes article, cloth diapers will save you around $1,000 in your child’s lifetime, that is a huge savings!

There is some expensive upfront costs for cloth diapering.  You will need to stock up on cloth diapers, but once you have your stock, the costs will go down significantly.

7.  Use Rebate Apps

Never, and I mean NEVER, throw away a receipt before scanning it into a few rebate apps.  Many of these apps give cash back on diaper purchases.  So, if you can, match a coupon with a deal, and then get a cash back rebate!  Cha-ching!  We’re talking big savings here!

A few of my favorite cash back apps for diapers are:

Fetch Rewards:  Fetch Rewards is so easy and quick to use!  All you have to do is scan your grocery receipt into the app and you’ll automatically earn points based on the products you bought.  Lastly, you can redeem your points for gift card to your favorite places!  Yay!

Ibotta:  Ibotta is another great rebate app that consistently offers cash back on diaper purchases.  To use Ibotta, select the store you shopped at, click on the items you bought, and then scan your receipt into the app.  You will be reward with cash back into your account within just a few hours.  Easy, peasy!

8.  Join Rewards Programs

Many of your favorite diaper companies (I’m looking at you pampers) offers reward programs where you can earn points to use towards free diapers and other fun stuff.  If you are going to be buying diapers anyways, you might as well get rewarded for it, right?  Right!

It is possible to save money on diapers!

I know just how stressful finances can feel when you are raising young kids, the expenses just never seem to end!  But, I also know that there are some tricks you can try to get diapers for cheap!  I hope this article helped answer some of your questions.

At Home Preschool Activities

February 18, 2021 By: Sweet Frugal Lifecomment

How to entertain preschoolers at home.

Preschoolers are one of my favorite ages!  They are full of so much curiosity and innocence.  I honestly miss having my little ones home with me (they all grew up!).  One thing about preschoolers is that they are a bundle of energy, always wanting to be kept busy and entertained.  Fortunately, there are many cheap at home preschool activities to keep their busy bodies active and engaged.  Here are a few of our favorites!

At Home Preschool Activities

Here are a few of my easy at home preschool activities.  I hope your kids love them as much as my kids did!

1.  Build A Fort

A fort can be a fun place for preschoolers to hide out, read books, and play.

You can easily build a fort by putting a few blankets over the kitchen table.  Or, push some chairs together and drape them with blankets.

Don’t forget to fill the fort with pillows, stuffed animals and a few books for reading.  Enjoy snuggling together inside your newly built fort!

2.  Make White Dirt

My son loved making “white dirt” when he was a preschooler.  This was a simple activity that kept him entertained for hours.

To make white dirt just mix together four cups of flour, 1 cup of brown sugar, and 1 cup of rice together in a 9X13 inch baking pan.

This white dirt is perfect for your preschooler to use for digging and playing with their small toy tractors.

3.  Play In Bubbles

Fill your sink up with water and dish soap to form a bubbly sink.  Let your preschooler play in the sink with plastic cups, spoons, and bowls.

This might make a bit of a watery mess, but it’s so fun for the little ones and a great at home preschool activity.

4.  Make Playdough

It’s so easy to make homemade playdough.  All you need is a few ingredients, and preschoolers can be the best helpers!  I’ve tried many (seriously, MANY) playdough recipes over the years.  This playdough recipe is the very best out there!

5.  Have A Teddy Bear Picnic

Preschoolers love teddy bear picnics!  To host a teddy bear picnic just lay a blanket on the floor and gather all of the teddy bears and stuffed animals in the house to set on the blanket.

Next, prepare a few simple treats or snacks to bring to the picnic.

Now, all you have to do is enjoy a picnic with your preschooler and favorite teddys.

6.  Play Hide And Seek

Preschoolers love to play hide and seek, and it requires zero materials or planning, which makes it a quick and easy activity for a parent to throw together.

To play hide and seek, one person will close their eyes and count to twenty.  While counting the hiders must quickly try to conceal themselves in a hiding place.

Once the seeker reaches twenty they will search and to try to find the hiders.  It’s so fun to see where kids decide to hide.  Let everyone have a turn being the “seeker” and “hider”.

7.  Paper Bag Puppets

Another fun at home preschool activity is to make paper bag puppets.  Turn a brown paper bag into a puppet by coloring a face on the flap.  Make a few different puppets and then put on a puppet show with your preschooler!

8.  Magic Toothpick Science Experiment

This magic toothpick science experiment is another easy at home preschool activity.  All you need is a few ingredients and 5 minutes to prepare this experiment.  Your preschooler will love watching the pretty colors form!

9.  Caterpillar Soup

Mix up some caterpillar soup with your kiddo by pouring some water into a bowl and then letting your preschooler shake in a few spices.  I try to pick spices with different colors to help give the “soup” some variety and color.

Give the soup a few stirs with the spoon and then set it outside for the “caterpillars” to enjoy.  My kids always figured out this wasn’t really for caterpillars, but they still enjoyed pretending!

10.  Have A Dance Party

Turn on some fun Disney tunes and have a dance party.  Kids love showing off their newest moves!

11.  Form A Marching Band

Form a marching band as a family using items around the house.  Someone can shake spices, another bang two pot lids together, and someone else could use a pot and spoon as a drum.

Use your “instruments” to march around the house like a marching band.  (pro tip:  you might want to wear ear plugs for this activity!  😉 )

12.  Make A Road Out Of Tape

Use painters tape to form a road over the carpet, stairs, couches, everywhere you want!  Let your preschooler drive their matchbox cars over the road.

You can even add a town to your roads by using the tape to make a few houses, supermarket, school, church, etc.

13.  Make Ice Cream

Make homemade ice cream in a bag.  It only takes a few ingredients and Preschoolers love helping to shake the bag and of course try the ice cream!  We love this ice cream in a bag recipe.

14. Indoor Scavenger Hunt

Set up an indoor scavenger hunt for your preschooler to enjoy.  Make a list (don’t forget to include pictures) of items for your preschooler to find around the house.

Give them the list and let them find each item.  Give a snack or small price to them once the list has been completed.

15.  Peanut Butter Play Dough

A fun twist on the the original play dough is this easy peanut butter play dough recipe.  My kids love helping me make it, probably because they love getting to eat some of it!

This is a great activity for teaching the 5 senses to preschoolers.  They can taste, touch, smell, see, and even hear the play dough being squished.

16.  Play Library

Have fun pretending to have a library at home.  Set up a few books around the house and let your preschooler pick out a few to “check out”.  Pretend to be the librarian and let your child come to you to check out each book.

Then, switch places!  Allow your preschooler a chance to be the librarian while you check out books.

17.  Finger Paint

Mix up some finger paint for your child to paint with.  Give them some white papers and let them create a masterpiece!  Don’t forget to hang the painting on the fridge once it’s done!

18.  Send Letters

Teach your child to serve and send love to others by making a few cards or letters for grandparents or other loved ones.

Your preschooler can draw a cute picture inside and then sign their name if they are able to.  Not only is this a fun at home preschool activity, it’s also a great way to put a smile on someone’s face.

19.  Make Cereal Necklaces

Help your preschooler develop their fine motor skills by making cereal necklaces together.

Use some yarn or string and thread it with cheerios or fruit loop cereal until the necklace is the right size.

20.  Cut Up Magazines

Get out a few magazines for your preschooler to look through.  Let them cup out their favorite pictures.  After you have a pile of pictures use them to tell each other stories.

This is a great activity for developing fine motor skills and imagination!

21.  Play Dress Up

Let your preschooler pretend to be someone else for a day by playing dress up.  I always kept a big box of fun dress up clothes for the kids to play with.  These were usually items I collected from the thrift store, like pirate, princess, or super hero costumes.

If you don’t have a dress up box you could lend some of your clothes to your child to dress in for the day.  They would have so much fun pretending to be mom or dad for a few hours!

22.  Cosmic Kids Yoga

My preschoolers all loved Cosmic Kids Yoga.  Its a fun YouTube channel that teaches kids how to do yoga, by telling a story.  There are many different stories and videos to choose from.  This is a great way to keep your kids active and their bodies moving.

23.  Build An Obstacle Course

Another fun activity to keep your kids moving is to make an obstacle course for them to go through.  This can be done in your backyard or wherever you happen to have some large space to run.

Here is an example of what your obstacle course might look like:

  • Do 5 jumping jacks.
  • Kick a ball.
  • Crawl under the trampoline.
  • Walk backyards 20 feet.
  • Swing for 1 minute.
  • Hop on one foot.
  • Carry a ball to another part of the yard.

After you make up the obstacle course for your child, let them then make up a course for you to complete!

24.  Have A Pillow Fight

Grab a few pillows and have an old fashioned pillow fight!  It’s always fun to let loose with your kids!  A pillow fight is sure to bring a lot of laughter and giggles.

25.  Art Hub For Kids

Try the fun YouTube channel Art Hub for Kids for some fun drawing lessons.  This is a great resource for making drawing easy and FUN for kids.  They even have an entire series of drawings for preschoolers.

26.  Bake Cookies

I’ve never met a preschooler who didn’t love baking cookies!  Let them choose their favorite kind (chocolate chip is always a first choice at our house) and then spend an hour baking together, and of course eating!

  • Make sure to grab my recipe ebook for a few of our favorite recipes!

27.  Play Simon Says

My preschoolers always loved to play Simon Says.

Choose one person to stand on one side of the room, this person is “Simon.”  Have everyone else stand on the other side of the room.

Simon will then instruct the other players to do an activity by using the phrase, “Simon Says.”  For example:  “Charly, Simon says to hop up and down three times.”

The person who was instructed to do the activity then must do what was instructed of them.

If Simon does not use the phrase, “Simon Says” before giving the command, then the player should not complete the activity.  If they do the activity without the phrase “Simon Says” used then that player is then out of the game.

Make sure to give everyone a chance to be Simon, kids love that job!

28.  Make Ooblek

Ooblek is a fun, slimy activity for preschoolers.  It only takes two cheap ingredients and can entertain your little one for hours.

To make ooblek just mix 2 cups of cornstarch and 1 cup of water together in a bowl.

That’s it!  Now, just let them squish and play with the ooblek.

29.  Color Hot Rocks

Collect a few rocks from outside for this fun Hot Rocks activity.  This is a fun twist on the typical painting rocks activity that you and your child are sure to love!

30.  Play Store

Another fun pretend play for at home preschool activity is to play store.  We like to play this activity by setting out a few toys and other objects around the room, this is our “store.”

Next, get out some play money (or make some with paper) and put it in one section of the room for the cash register.  Make sure to give some money to the shopper too!

Now, let your little one “shop” at the store, including checking out with the play money at the cash register.

This is a fun activity to let them get some practice at being a grown up.

31.  Make a Sun Catcher

Crafts always make for fun at home preschool activities.  You will need a few supplies for these easy sun catchers, but if you happen to have them around the house it is a great craft projects for little ones!

32.  Play Balloon Volleyball

Blow up a few balloons and play balloon volleyball with your preschooler.  There aren’t any rules to this volleyball game!  Just enjoy tossing the balloons to each other and having fun with your kids.

33.  Play Red Light, Green Light

Red Light, Green Light is another fun game to play with preschoolers.  To play this game have one person stand on one end of the room, this will be the “caller”, and the other players stand in a line at the other end of the room.

The caller will then start calling out commands.  Commands for this game will be “Red Light” or “Green Light.”  When “Green Light” is called the players can walk as quickly as they can towards the caller.  But, when “Red Light” is called the players must stop moving.

The point of this game is to be the first person to reach the caller.

34.  Matchbox Car Wash

Preschoolers love playing in water.  One fun activity is to set up a Matchbox Car Wash.

Get out a few matchbox cars, a cake pan, bowl of water, and a pastry brush.

One at a time put a matchbox car in the cake pan and wash it using the pastry brush.  This activity is so simple, but kids love it!

35.  Make Hand Shadows

Find a dark place in your house and use a flashlight to light up one wall.  Use your hands to make shadows on the wall.  It’s so fun to see what shadows each of you can come up with.

If you are needing some hand shadow inspiration, check out this fun YouTube video!

36.  Play Will It Float

Will It Float is a fun, easy activity for preschoolers to help learn about what items float and what items sink.

To play this game let your preschooler gather a few small objects around the house, make sure to only let them choose items that are water proof.

Then fill up the sink with water.

Have your preschooler guess which items they think will sink in the water and which ones will float.  Last, drop each of the objects into the sink of water one by one.  It’s so fun to see which items float!

37.  Make a Paper Quilt

Cut up small squares of paper and let your preschooler glue them onto a large piece of paper.  They have then made their very own paper quilt!  It’s so fun to let them choose their colors and patterns and use some creativity.

In Conclusion

There are so many cheap at home preschool activities.  I hope you and your little ones enjoy some of these activities on my list.

LEGO Birthday Party for Under $20

August 5, 2020 By: Sweet Frugal Life5 Comments

Cheap LEGO birthday party ideas for boys.

We had an exciting birthday at our house recently!  My son turned six years old!  When I asked him what he wanted his party theme to be, he immediately asked for a LEGO themed birthday party with all of his friends.  He loves all things LEGO and I was excited to make this party come together.

I wanted to give him a special birthday, but I also wanted to spend the LEAST amount of money as possible (story of my life!).  I DID it!  The party was a huge success, and I spent LESS than $20!  Seriously proud of myself right now!  Today I’m breaking down the party and how much I spent.

8862961B-358B-4F3C-8F13-DF6736CF59D4

The Invitations:  $0

Sticking with the theme we (obviously) wanted LEGO themed invitations, and to save money I committed to only using supplies I already had at home.

3324D95E-4CDF-4911-A47C-8E2C44399C94

After some creativity and trial and error I came up with these super easy DIY LEGO party invites.

Homemade LEGO Party Invitations

Cut a colored paper into a rectangle card shape. (see how exact I am....;) )

Cut out six circles per card in matching colors.

Glue circles to front of card in a LEGO style pattern.

Optional:  I cut little pieces from a Magic Eraser and glued them to each of the circles.  This gave them a raised look.

Inside the LEGO invite was just a simple typed up paper with all of the party info.  It only took me a few minutes to whip it up on my computer!

My son adored these invitations, and didn’t cost me any money Big win!

The Decorations:  $4

863ABA55-B7C2-44E9-B176-0A3BC815FEBD

I tried to go fairly simple on the decorations (these are 6 year old boys we are talking about….I don’t think they even noticed much of the decor!).

First stop is ALWAYS The Dollar Tree!  While there I bought a pack of balloons and a couple rolls of streamers.  I tried to focus on the classic LEGO colors of red, yellow, green and blue. These were all used to decorate around the house.

For the table center piece I grabbed a few of our mason jars from our storage room and filled them with some LEGOs from our collections.  These also ended up being so fun for the kids to build with while they were waiting for me to serve the cake (I love multi purpose decor!).

B6CB7B98-8B02-40A9-BD64-C42F86223D57

The total for decorations came to only $4!

The Food:  $6

A0A2D764-238E-4337-976A-EADC59628F3A

To cut costs on food, I decided to have cake the only food served at the party.  I made the cake from scratch, spent $2 on the frosting, and $3 for the Oreos used on top.

The goal was to decorate the cake to make it look like a giant LEGO.  Truthfully, it didn’t turn out great…..but, my son thought it was the coolest cake ever, and that’s all that matters!

The cake was so simple to make.  I cooked the batter in a 9×13 pan and then frosted it with blue frosting.

Next, I frosted the Oreos with the same frosting and placed them on top so that it would resemble a LEGO.  My kids told me that the cake needed the word LEGO on the Oreos, so I used a toothpick to include write out the word.

These darling LEGO themed plates were also found at The Dollar Tree (of course!).  I had plastic cups and forks already at home so I used them on the table as well.  We pulled out one of my fabric tablecloths and skipped buying a plastic one.  It worked out perfect!

Out of all the categories, I spent the most money on food.  The total came to $6.

The Games:  $2

Honestly, I don’t love planning birthday party games.  It always feels so stressful to me.  I decided to go a little more simple and stress free this year, and it seemed to work!  A plus side to simple is that also usually means less money (and I always like spending less!)!

Pin the Head on the LEGO Man

Our first game was pin the head on the LEGO man and it ended up being a big hit!

Go here to print out this free LEGO man printable.

Each child got to choose one of the silly LEGO faces.  Then one at a time they were blindfolded, spun around a few times and then had to try to guess where the face needed to go.

The kids loved getting to choose from all of the fun faces.  We played this game again and again!

Don’t Eat Pete

Our next game was Don’t Eat Pete.  This one was really fun and simple.

You can print out the free LEGO Don’t Eat Pete printable here.

Put cheerios (or any small finger food) on each of the LEGO men.

One child leaves the room and the other kids point to one of the LEGO characters to be “Pete.”

Bring the child back into the room.  He then begins eating the cheerios one by one.  If he picks up the chosen “Pete” cereal the other kids yell, “Don’t Eat Pete.”

This entertained them for a good 20 minutes!  Everyone wanted a turn to eat!

LEGO Treasure Hunt

This LEGO treasure hunt was another easy activity and I was able to use items we already had around the house.

Before the party I hid a bunch of our LEGOs around our yard.  The kids all ran around trying to find as many as they could.  (kindof like an easter egg LEGO hunt! 😉 )

Spoon Relay Race

Once we found all of the LEGOs I split the kids into two teams for a LEGO on the spoon relay race!

Each team was given a bucket of LEGOs and a spoon.  They had to walk with a LEGO on their spoon across the yard a little ways and drop their LEGO into another bucket.

The first team to successfully bring all of their LEGOs across wins!  It was so fun watching all those little boys trying to run fast AND balance their LEGO!

Ball Toss

Our last game was probably the favorite!  I spray painted two boxes (I bought the spray paint for $2), and then cut two holes in each box.

The kids had to stand at some tape I put on the ground and try to throw a ball into one of the holes.

This was a little hard for most of the kids, which created a fun challenge.  They wanted to play this game for a few rounds to try to get the ball in each of the holes.

I have decided simple really is the best way to go!  Simple games brought me a lot less stress and I only spent a total of $2 for all of the games whoo!

The Party Favors:  $5

I really struggled trying to come up with a cute yet frugal LEGO themed party favor, so was THRILLED when I found these cute little LEGO boxes at The Dollar Tree.  They came in a pack of 4 for $1, so I bought 2 packs.  I also bought three packs of Starbursts for $1 each.

We filled each of the boxes with a few pieces of Starbursts candy and the kids LOVED them!  I thought the candy would be the hit, but the favorite was definitely having their very own little box. It ended up being the PERFECT favor, and I only spent $5!

The Total:  $17

In total I spent $17!  I was so thrilled that I was able to pull this party off without having to spent a lot of money.

I’ve realized that kids REALLY don’t care how extravagant the party is….all my son wanted was to have a few friends over, blow out candles on his birthday cake, and open a few presents.

He didn’t notice that the party was all done on a very small budget.  All he noticed was that his family and friends were taking the time to show him some love.  And you know what….THAT is ALL that matters!

How to Save Money on Back to School Shopping

July 12, 2020 By: Sweet Frugal Lifecomment

Frugal tips for back to school supplies.

Summer goes by way to fast!  Back to school supply season always sneaks up on us and I kind of hate it.  Sending my three kids back to school makes me a little sad as they keep growing (and I keep telling them to stop!).  As back to school keeps coming closer it also means it’s time to spend money (which I also don’t like…..I guess I’m kindof picky huh???).  This time of year I am usually spending money on school sports, year books, clothing, and supplies.  The expenses add up quick, too quick!  Because of this, I am always learning how to save money on back to school shopping.

I’m going to be completely honest with you….

Buying back to school supplies has always been a spending trigger for me.  I just love all of the fresh pencils, crayons, and new binders.  When I see all the great deals I really want to grab a few extra here and a few extra there….anyone else know what I’m talking about???

I have been working harder the past couple of years to not give into these temptations and stay within my back to school budget.  Here are a few of the things I have learned to help make it happen.

1.  Shop Your House First

The first and most important way to save money on back to school supplies is to shop your house before going to the store!

This really needs to begin on the last day of school.  When your kids bring home backpacks full of their used school supplies, make an effort to save as many of these supplies as possible.

Sort though everything and save as many of the folders, crayons, binders, pens, markers, etc. as you can.  Personally, I aim for reusing about 90% of my kids supplies.

I keep everything stored in a large box; and when the time comes to buy supplies for the upcoming year, we pull out this box and “go shopping.”

When you get your list of requested back to school supplies try to find as many of the supplies at home first, before going to the store.  Search through your school supply box, and dig through closets, desks and drawers.

Get the kids involved in this!  Turn it into a game and have a race to see who can find the most supplies from their classroom list at home.

2.  Compare Prices

Another way to save money on back to school shopping is to take the time to compare prices at multiple stores.  Look through the weekly store fliers and make a list of which store has which supply for the least amount of money.

I use the free Flipp app to browse through the weekly sales fliers.  It’s really easy to use!

As you are price comparing you will find that some school supplies will be cheaper at the dollar store, but other items will be cheaper somewhere else.  It takes a little extra work and planning, but it will save you money!

Before going shopping for your back to school supplies, make a list of which stores has which items for the best price.  Use this list to help you remember where to shop and what to buy.

3.  Use Coupons

I also really like to search for manufacture or in store coupons.  Match these coupons with store sales for the biggest discounts.

A few places you can find coupons are:

  • Online using websites such as coupons.com or couponsurfer.com
  • In Sunday newspaper inserts
  • In stores near the front door or on the shelves

4.  Take Advantage of Cashback

Always utilize cashback apps as you shop.  This is the best way to earn free money when buying things you would be buying anyways.

A few cashback apps I love for saving money on back to school shopping are:

  • Rakuten:  When you use Rakuten for earning cash on all online shopping, you are given a percentage cashback on all purchases.  It’s easy to use and requires almost no work!

Just log into the Rakuten app or website.  Select the store you want to shop at, and then shop and checkout as normal.

Your cashback will automatically be put into your account and mailed to you every few months!  Yay!

You can get a BONUS $30 cash when you sign up for Rakuten using this link.

  • Ibotta:  Another favorite cashback app is Ibotta.  Ibotta offers rebates on a wide variety of items in multiple stores.  All you have to do is shop, select the qualifying items within the app, and scan your receipt.

You can cash out once your account reaches $20!

Get a $10 BONUS when you sign up with this link.

  • Fetch Rewards:  Fetch Rewards is one of the easiest way to earn cash back on school supplies.  Simply download the app here and then scan your receipt into the app.  You will automatically earn points, which can be redeemed for gift cards to all of your favorite stores.

Use code FETCH2K for 2,000 bonus points when signing up for Fetch!

5.  Leave the Kids at Home

Taking a school aged kid down the aisles of school supplies is the equivalent of taking them to a candy store.  One glimpse of the fun, colorful, trendy (and very very expensive) supplies and they are convinced they “just have to have it!”  (any other moms relate?!?!?).

I have learned the hard way that I will spend less money if I leave my kids at home.  If my kids never lay eyes on all the pretty school supplies, they won’t even know they are missing anything!

Leave those sweet kids at home and buy what you can afford, without having to feel guilty for saying “no.”

In Conclusion

There are many ways that you can save money when back to school shopping.  The most important thing is that you set a budget, and you stick to it.  No matter what!  We got this!

Fun Family Valentine Traditions

How to celebrate valentines day with kids and on a budget!

If you’ve been following me on Instagram you’ve probably learned that my philosophy on parenting (and basically life) revolves around easy and cheap!  Our Family Valentines Day Celebrations are no different.

Did you know that the average person spends around $140 on Valentines Day.  This shocked me!  I understand that it’s fun to splurge a few times a year and I am a big fan of celebrating love and budgeting for joy.…but, I really believe this can be done without spending a lot of money.

Our Valentines Day is a celebration that includes my husband and I, and our three children.  I like to include my children because I love them too!  Valentines Day doesn’t have to only be about romantic love, it can be about all types of love!  We have a fun family day on Valentines day and then a frugal valentines date the next night.

Family Celebrations

Our Valentines Day may be frugal, but that doesn’t make it any less special.  Even though I spend very little money, our day is still just as lovely and fun as ever.  My 6 year old has actually been counting down to the day for weeks (not joking).

Mailbox Love

Technically our valentines day traditions begin a couple of weeks BEFORE February 14th.  Years ago I bought these darling tin mailboxes at the Target dollar spot (I love Target!).  They were about $5 a piece, so not super frugal, but they have lasted us for years, and have been one of my favorite purchases ever (for reals).  I found a similar mailbox on Amazon here.

We use these mailboxes to “deliver” little love notes and handmade gifts to each other in the days leading up to Valentines Day.  It warms my heart every single time I watch one of my kids put a kind note into their siblings mailbox.  Real talk…..my kids fight a lot…..so these moments of kindness are just so so special to me.  I like to surprise my kids in their mailbox with small little gifts, such as a pencil, eraser, or some type of treat and a few love notes.  They love this!

Morning Love

Valentines day at our house always begins with heart shaped pancakes.  These aren’t fancy by any means….but guess what!  My kids never care.  They love their heart pancakes, misshaped and all (kids are pretty awesome this way, aren’t they??).

School lunchboxes are packed in the morning as usual, with the exception of a few extra goodies.  I like to throw in a 25 cent box of conversation hearts and a little love note from me.    Now that my oldest is 13 I’ve started skipping the extra goodies in her lunchbox….I have learned that teenagers aren’t the biggest fan of mom notes in their lunchboxes….go figure!  😉

Dinner Love

Decorating is not my forte, but I try to make our valentines dinner table a little extra special.  I use our nicest tablecloth (which is actually just a cheap one that I bought from Walmart 8 years ago), I always light a few candles, and cut out some red paper hearts to place around the table.  So easy right!?!?  But the kids love it!

Valentines dinner is simple, yet fun.  One year we had a heart shaped pizza, this year I will be making a chicken pot pie with the top crust decorated as hearts.  The amount of money I spend on dinner is always in my regular weekly grocery budget, so no excess spending here!  Woo!

Frugal Valentines Gifts

Every year on our dinner table I include a small gift for each of my kids, and something for my husband.  This year I bought each of them a small box of chocolates from the Dollar Tree, my daughters both received a small necklace and my son received a stuffed animal from the Dollar Tree.  My husband is getting a larger sized box of chocolates and a love letter.

In Conclusion

These easy Valentine traditions aren’t anything fancy and hardly cost me anymore, but the gesture means a lot to my kids and I have found them trying to follow my example.  The past few years my kids have been making their own little valentine gifts, and then secretly placing them on the table before dinner.

This is what Valentines Day is all about!  It’s about spending the time and thought to give service and love to someone you care about.

I was going to buy some strawberries and chocolate for an after dinner dessert and activity, but it honestly didn’t fit in this weeks grocery budget, so I didn’t.  Maybe next year!
